Spacing between paragraphs
-
Hello,
I may have done something wrong while composing my last blog entry. While composing and editing, the blog looks ok, but when I published, the spaces between the paragraphs disappeared. The earlier posts are ok, but I can’t tell why I don’t have spaces in the published version, at least in the one on my laptop where I compose. Please help.
Thanks VERY much!

Hi Jim,
Can you let me know how you composed the post? Did you copy and paste from elsewhere? It looks like there are quite a few “div” tags, basically HTML coding that normally groups text. You can see it when you visit the Text Editor here:
https://jimwellborndotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=187&action=edit
For example, you’ll see the following:
<div></div> <div></div> <div><strong>Ry Cooder has a recording by that title - "I Flathead."</strong> I think it's appropriate today, November 5, 2014. The day after the mid-term elections. I've claimed to be a member of the Acronym Party. That's not true. I'm a Democrat, fluttering in the winds today. The flat head of course occurs over time, not overnight, usually. The repeated slapping of the forehead when one discovers what was there all along. Usually accompanied by, "Well, I'll be...."</div> <div></div> <div></div>I suspect those are causing the issue. Can you try removing the div references from your post and see if that clears the issue up?

You were absolutely right. I kept editing the piece over and over again and somehow must have created those <div> references in doing so. What I did here was to remove those references throughout and it looks now just as I wanted it too.
I wish I knew how exactly I did it. I didn’t do any pasting from other areas, and may never know what really happened. Nevertheless, thank you for looking into it and especially for recommending a proper solution to it. I’m inspired to learn more about HTML! Thank you!!!

Not a problem! Happy to help. Whenever something weird formatting-wise pops up like that, you can normally take a look in the Text Editor just to see if anything looks amiss. A multitude of div tags or an unclosed tag can wreak havoc.
Let us know if you need anything else!

I was making an entry in my journal app over the weekend and saw the text outline of the blog we were discussing! You had asked me if I may have pasted from another source and I’d said no. Well, I’d completely forgotten about this. I DID copy paste from my journal into the blog window. I’m guessing that this journal entry came with its own formatting characteristics. I will definitely not do it that way again. Until I know more of what to look for with regard to the formatting language of HTML, I will do all my work within the WordPress environment. Thanks again for the perceptive Q&A. Would you perhaps mind providing an example of an “unclosed tag” so I can be on the lookout for those as well? Thanks!

Sure! So, an unclosed tag is when you have an opening tag in your text, but not a corresponding closing one. Here’s an example:
<div> Text here. More text. bolded textYou’ll notice that the example above does not have a
</div>. When that happens, it can cause some formatting issues on your site.Just a note, you would need to be in the Text Editor to view this code.
