spam

I have a quick question regarding spam. Today has been a spam day for my blog. I’ve been deleting them, of course. What I wanted to know is if spam has an affect on stats.

    thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Nope spam doesn’t have an affect on stats.

Thanks. A couple of days ago, I got a huge spike in my stats — I mean HUGE. Today I got an inordinate (at least for my blog) amount of spam.

Thanks for answering so quickly. :)

  • Certain types of spam will affect your stats – spam posted by humans.

Generally not in large volumes relative to your typical traffic though.

Thanks. No, I don’t think it was human I kept seeing the same thing over and over such as “cute site” (there’s nothing cute about my blog, LOL), “good topic,” “thanks for this,” things like that — and over and over. I just don’t want the spam to affect my stats. I’m glad they don’t but doesn’t explain the sudden spike in my stats. Weird. I wonder what happened.

Another thing to keep in mind when you think about stats is that you also need to see them “long term.”

One day of 1000 hits will raise your numbers, but 100 days of adding 10 more (ave / day) is more of an indication of how your blog is doing. Watch trends weekly, or more importantly monthly. An if yearly stats (if your blog is older) are still rising, you know you are doing ok.

If search engines find your blog suddenly and give you a decent ranking, it won’t be long till the spammers find it too. All that means is the spammers will come after, they won’t affect your real stats except as telly says.

    @ raincoaster:
    Hmm.
I may have noticed that the amount of spam askimet catches goes up if my little blog has a BIG day? Do you think that is so?

  • Unknown's avatar

Of course. The reason your site has a big day is lots of people are talking about it and linking to it. And links draw spam. Spam trails activity, it doesn’t cause activity.

Thanks. This all makes sense. I’ve been watching my stats slowely, but steadly climb. Something in a search engine must have made the stats jump dramatically for a few days.

Anyway, thanks for helping me understand. This is the second time I’ve used this forum and it’s been great!
