SPam

Hi there.
My blog (nonsonoipocondriaco.wordpress.com) is receiving a lot of spam 99.9% safely blocked by Akismet.
Two questions:
– I am receiving literally hundreds of spam each day. No way to block them completely?
– In the meanwhile I am getting a lot of visits from USA and Hong Kong. Very strange since my blog is in italian. Any connection between strange foreign visits and spam?Thank you

Hello @kikkakonekka,
I am receiving literally hundreds of spam each day. No way to block them completely?
Yes, There are ways to block spamming in websites. Companies like WordPress.com already have a lot of security measures to control spam. Some companies usually blacklists known spammers’ IP address or IP ranges. But there’s a downside for this, if a legitimate user is trying to access the website from the same IP range, it will be blocked to them too.
But nowadays with the growth in artificial intelligence, spam detection softwares have acquired a lot of capabilities in controlling spam. Literally it is not possible to block spamming completely Spammers come up with new methods each day. But our security systems are already smart in detecting and blocking the spam.
In the meanwhile I am getting a lot of visits from USA and Hong Kong. Very strange since my blog is in italian. Any connection between strange foreign visits and spam?
Yes, I think. Because from my experience, most of the spammers are using bots to browse through the web and post their website links whenever the get a space. Actually they are posting these spam links to get more backlinks to their page and get an advantage in SEO. But we need to remember, they are not real people. Just softwares for pasting links everywhere. Most of them use anonymous proxy servers and VPNs for hiding their real IP address. So we can’t actually determine the country, the bot runs from.
Hope this helps.

Thank you Melbin Mathew for your quick reply.
So, at the moment, we can do that much.
Spam is detected, and blocked, in this moment I have 120+ comments in the spam.
I can easily delete them all with just one click, but who knows if there is a “false positive” comment between them?
I mean… I know there are more serious problems in the world…About visits, my statistics are at the top, but I know it can be possible…
Thank you again, have a nice day

Hi Andrea,
Spam filters like Askimet analyses comments trackbacks, and contact form messages from a large number of sites each day. They use this data to train their system and develop rules based on this. Literally they are getting smarter day by day.
Yes, you are right. There is a very slight chance of false-positives, as no software is perfect. But from my experience, Askimet didn’t block any genuine comments on my WordPress blogs.
If we find any genuine comment markes as spam, we can report it as ‘not spam’ and help the system to become more smarter.
