Spam and Site Lockout
-
Over the last couple of days we’ve had serious problems with SPAM.
We’ve used Askimet for a long time and it has worked well.
The new Spammer seems to be able to get around it and for the last few days we’ve had a Spam comment uploaded every minute. Each comment had the same user name, but the email address and IP address was different.
I deleted about 1000 SPAM comments yesterday manually.
This morning I wasn’t able to access WordPress admin from my normal machine. I got:
ERROR: Access from your IP address has been blocked for security reasons. Please contact the administrator.I logged in from another network and saw about 700 new SPAM comments. I deleted those.
I then looked at the WP Security settings and added Captcha and an option that tries to identify robotic comments. After doing that, the SPAM comments seemed to have stopped.
But my normal account network access was still blocked.I noticed something odd. When I looked at the Login Activity, it shows my user and the times I logged in yesterday and this morning, but the IP address listed is similar to the ones used by the SPAMMER — the address that is blocked. When I check my external IP address though, it is totally different. Logins prior to the last couple of days show my normal IP address.
The second network IP I used to access the account is now blocked too.
