Spam attack? Anyone having this?
-
I’m currently having like, 5 comments a minute from differnet IPs around the world. These aren’t bots, but people who are manipulating my comments with random messages. They are in English and not posting links. It’s weird. Is this a coordinated attack?

It appears to be a group from Europe who randomly picks blogs to attack. I have no pingbacks, but a ton of hits in the last hour from this website: http://forums.battlegroundeurope.com/index.php
-
Oh, fun for you. They’re attempting to break your site for the hell of it? As long as Akismet is catching them, no harm done.
And it will be FABULOUS for hits!
If Akismet is not catching them, email support at wordpress dot com and ask staff to do something.

On thinking it over what I’d do is: scan the forums for info on what happens if you disable comments. If you lose them, abandon this path. If pre-existing comments remain even after you disable them then just disable comments for the next few hours. Regular readers will understand.
-
I have decided to just shut down commenting for a bit — I sure hope they don’t return. It’s more annyoing than anything else.
-
But leave the comment in the Utterly post where Anonymous says “they’ve each went.” With grammar like that, no wonder he wants to remain anonymous.
If you don’t want to disable comments, you could require commenters to register.
-
Oh, that’s an excellent idea.
I’m cautious about disabling all comments because I vaguely remember that it cost somebody all comments on a page. That would be heartbreaking if it were still true, but I honestly don’t know. Maybe staff can enlighten us?
-
Isn’t Akismet supposed to “learn” which comments are spam, and filter them out? Maybe the problem is with them.
-
No, see these are coming from actual individuals all over. There would be no way for Akismet to differentiate them from real comments. It’s an attack of meaningless comments, but it’s not technically spam.
-
If they were routing all the comments through their own server, that would be easy to block, but they’re not. It’s like Anonymous: they just say “hey everybody, do this” and everybody everywhere does.
-
OK, so I think it’s over now. Thanks for the help, though.
Basically, I went on the gaming website and asked them to stop and they decided to apologize.

That’s a scary thought. If only one post is involved he could have closed comments for it, but if they’re determined they’d probably just move to another.

A mutual friend lost a vote on my blog. That friend went on to the gaming website and told them to stop and apologize.
