Spam blogs are destroying tag surfing

Another part of the algorithm for spam blogs would be for the bot to consider how old they are. And what country they are from. That is 2 early indicators. Those plus the link count would probably arrive at quite a good shortlist for manual inspection.

My opinion: Not a computer techie or anything-but what about having to enter captcha codes when posting-it might be an inconvenience-but the people that appreciate no spam will not mind doing this. Just a thought.

Much as I despise splogs, I would very much mind having to enter a captcha every time I wanted to post on my own blog. And I don’t even have sight problems.

I was always under the impression that Akismet did monitor signups. I vaguely remember Matt mentioning it in an interview, though he wouldn’t disclose exactly how it handles them. I’d imagine weird-looking email addresses get flagged for a start.

All lot, if not all, of these spam blogs seem to come in on the “Uncategorized” tag. I tried adding that tag, then removing it, to see if it would forcibly filter out all the link spam, but no dice. How about a selectable option to “opt out” of viewing the “Uncategorized” tag?

I also like the idea another in this forum had on viewing excerpts of the posts, instead of the entire thing, to cut down on scrolling and allow more posts to be available on a page. Plus, it would help in getting past all the spam blogs that might not be on the “Uncategorized” tag.

By implementing both of these, maybe WordPress could substantially negate the effect these spam blogs are having on Tag Surfer.

I stopped surfing the Tag Surfer altogether after repeatedly encountering mature content on a completely unrelated tag. While there is a link to mark content as spam, there is no link to mark content as mature.

Yes, there is. It’s on the blue admin bar exactly where the Spam button is: under Blog Info, on the far right, in the drop-down menu. I use it all the time.

@rc-What you’re describing in the Admin bar would mean that I would have to actually be on the blog’s site, no? I was talking about surfing using the Dashboard’s Tag Surfer. Honestly, if I can mark a entire blog as Spam from there, why not also be able mark it as mature. I’m not so interested in having to go to the blog to do it. (In this case, the single post was enough to make me spew my morning coffee.)

Check out the Tag Surfer to see what I mean.

I can’t do anything unless I’m told where to look.

Every day I do go looking and every day I am successful – but I need help.

If they are not reported, expect them to stay.

@Mark, then what would be the best way to report a blog as mature without actually having to go to the blog? Open to suggestions here.

  • Unknown's avatar

You could send an email – but it’s much easier to visit the blog.
It was designed to be easy. It takes a a click to open, press space in the box, click to send. So along with 1 click to get to the blog, that’s 4 clicks. An email is many more.

One other thing – using the blue bar – it’s open 24/7 and they go to a different part of support.
It’s much more preferable for me that the admin bar is used.

Well, by magic the offending blog has now disappeared from my Dashboard’s Tag Surfer. So, nothing to report I guess.

Perhaps a “Mature?” link could be added in the Tag Surfer next to the “Spam?” link?

    Ta!

“Well, by magic the offending blog has now disappeared from my Dashboard’s Tag Surfer. So, nothing to report I guess.”

Maybe I suspended it earlier – but I don’t know.
If it comes back, let me know? After all, if everyone helps, everyone benefits.

@Mark-only if I get an official “I read Mature Blogs for WordPress.com” button to put on my blog. ;-)

“Maybe I suspended it earlier – but I don’t know.” In that case, thanks for the super quick action!

    Ta again
