Spam – Can I block the users?
-
I receive comments from the same group of users on the same post in my blog almost every day, and all of the comments are spam. I realize that wordpress already uses a spam filter, but I still have to go through and delete each comment by hand. This, though it is an efficent system for dealing with spam, is still tedious.
Is there any way that I can block a user from being able to comment on my blog, or do I have to manually delete all of the spam comments that build up in the spam folder? I know there is no way to block an ip – but I was hoping that I could block a user instead so to cut down the spam tremendously.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Don’t delete the spam comments – Akismet won’t learn they are spam – you should mark them as Spam – then Akismet will learn and put them in the Spam folder
Dashboard >> Discussions Settings >> you can put in keywords that when they are in a comment cause the comment to go to spam – put in something unique to the spammers.

That is where I find out that I have any comments – though Akismet’s spam folder. It always filters the comments as spam, without my teaching it at all. The comments still sit there though, and the folder has grown to over 200 comments before I couldn’t take it anymore and deleted them all.
Akismet does a great job filtering the comments, but I want to prevent them from being made (for the most part – or at least from the same spam artists all the time).

There is no need to sort through spam comments and delete them yourself if you don’t want to. Akismet deletes them automatically after 30 days.

Either way – deleting the comments or not is not the issue at hand, though thank you for letting me know that Akismet will delete them eventually. The question at hand is am I able to block individual users from commenting at all – or is it a block all comments or block none sort of situation?

No we cannot block or delete subscribers from public blogs. We cannot prevemnt anyone from subscribing to our RSS feeds on public blogs. However, please read this about public blogs that become private blogs > Blog Privacy and Subscribers > http://wpcommaven.wordpress.com/2011/09/05/blog-privacy-and-subscribers/
Note that you have complete control comment moderation. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#comment-moderation If your blog is public others can, of course, read it. They can submit comments but you can Moderate all comments and choose which ones to approve or not.
For trolls, you can “blacklist” them at Settings > Discussion toward the bottom of that page. Enter their email address, their username, and if they included it, their website. That will automatically send them to moderation so that their comments do not appear on the blog. Do note though that if they are determined, they can use a different email address or username to get around that. Also, do not put their IP address in the blacklist. IP addresses are no longer unique, and you might end up blocking legitimate visitors. Also, all they would have to do is go to a wi-fi hot spot, or connect via a different ISP and they could get around that.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#comment-blacklistOne other thing I would suggest is to set your blog so that first time commenters are held in moderation till approved, then from that point forward they will not need approval. Settings > Discussion. The next step on that of course is to set it so that all comments are held in moderation until approved. That way you are in control, and they might just get tired and go elsewhere after a while.
