SPAM Comment increase
-
In the spring I posted here that I’d seen a sudden upswing in comment SPAM that Askimet was catching and that the upswing started last November.
TimeThief suggested I may have approved a SPAM comment inadvertently. I have checked and rechecked and triple checked the approved comments and removed anything spurious, (of which I only found one that was really dubious).
However the SPAM has continued, and actually increased further with some days seeing multiple comments getting through and requiring moderation. Should I be unavailable to moderate for a day or so, the queue increases again.
Missed SPAM figures were ticking along at 0 or 1 then jumped to 10 in November 2012. At that time detected SPAM quadrupled. The number of missed SPAM has been increasing steadily since February of this year with the figure for this month at 47. (Detected SPAM is now approaching 8000 per month).
The SPAM comments that do get through seem to cluster on particular posts. Some of those “magnet” posts have no previous attached comments.
Is there anything that can be done to reduce the time I’m wasting on undetected SPAM comments.

No. Spammers become more inventive day by day. We are all experiencing an increase in spam and as Akisemt is a learning engine we can help it learn what it spam.
If you get spam that slips by Akismet then mark it as spam (do not delete it) and over time Akismet will learn it’s spam.

I’m experiencing the same thing – spammed comments are being marked as approved even though I did not, in fact, approve them. I welcome any further insight.

Timethief, thanks. However,as I have always marked them as SPAM, and the numbers continue to increase, doesn’t that mean Aksimet isn’t learning as fast as it should?

Having the same problem… I have probably gotten more spam in the last month than I had received in the 6 months before that combined.
I realise that there is nothing we can do about the issue but on a hunch it does seem that either the spammers have got Aksimet number (i.e. have figured out how to fool it more readily) or Aksimet is struggling to cope with the increase in spam everyone is experiencing…
I am willing to be that without Aksimet most of us would switch off the comment ability entirely. (as some of us have already done to other features e.g. Likes because of spam)
So we should probably be grateful that it is at least catching the bulk of the junk we have to put up with.
