Spam Comments

My blog is receiving over 1,000 spam comments per day. The filters are doing a pretty good job catching all of the ones using fake Facebook ID’s. What is getting through are a few using fake .com web addresses that preview as 404.

It is a bit frustrating because in the time it takes to clear the spam folder 10 more are received.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The vast and overwhelming majority of all so-called information on the internet is spam. Over 80% of all so-called comments submitted to .wordpress.com blogs every day are spam.

Spamming is big business and spam comes in waves. There are human beings who get paid to post spam. There are robotic programs that post spam. Sometimes an increase in spam can mean that you approved a spam comment and now the spammers are hammering your blog. Other times they simply find a new way to escape being noticed as spam.

Aksimet is a learning engine. If you get spam that slips by Akismet then mark it as spam (do not delete it) and over time Akismet will learn it’s spam. On the spam that Akismet catches on it takes only seconds to click “empty spam” and you don’t even have to click “empty spam” if you don’t want to. Akismet will maintain comments it has caught for 30 days from the time they were received, and then it will delete the comment automatically.

There is no such thing as eliminating all spam but Akismet works very well. For more information please take the time to read “5 things every blogger should know about spam” on this page Akismet: How it works http://akismet.com/how/

Set up comment moderation, if you have not already done so, because allowing anonymous commenting on your blog is like putting out the welcome mat for spammers.

This page > Settings > Discussion is where you set up defaults for comments. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/

I reduce spam by using this setting:

    3. Automatically close comments on articles older than __ days – This setting can be used to have comments closed on articles that are X days old. As an example, if you only want articles to accept comments for 30 days you would check the box and type 30 into the text field. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#other-comment-settings

And I moderate comments too. Comment moderation http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#comment-moderation

    Discussion Settings
    Other comment settings
_Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
_Users must be registered and logged in to comment

Spam comments are being marked span so that Akismet can learn the source. The count is now over 100 per hour. There is no way that I could wait 30 days. As you suggested, I am going to cut comments on old posts. That should knock out a lot of the garbage. It appears that the spam comments are being applied without actually visiting my blog, via the use of some API.

Timethief, I tried shutting off comments on posts older than 14 days, but that had no effect. Next I checked the box to require comments to come from those who are logged into wordpress.com. So far that has ended the spam. I am going to leave that setting on for a while and hopefully I will be able to remove it eventually so I can receive an occasional comment from outside the wordpress.com community.

I am facing the same problem. Have already emptied more than 800 from my spam folder today!! Was worried access to my site will be affected because of a bunch of fools, whose activity does not even contribute to my stats!

Is there someway of setting auto delete on spam?

Thanks Timethief. Have just set Akismet to delete the worst and most pervasive spam. Have a feeling this might just be a short term solution.

Newer blog: aspergerhuman.wordpress.com. All I want to know is why there are 112 HAM comments listed in Akismet, but only about 10 comments on my blog. If there are 112 comments I’d like to read them! This is important. If the 112 comments are actually SPAM, why aren’t they listed as SPAM?

    Thank-you, Gina Rex

    @bomoore
Yours is a different issue. Please post your own thread https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1

Requiring comments to be from those logged into wordpress.com is still working. It isn’t optimum because I occasionally get comments from those outside the WP universe, but for now it will have to do.

    Hi all!

I’m so sorry to hear about all the spam. As @timethief mentioned, it would be best for Spam related issues to go directly to our Akismet team. Please do as she mentioned and submit your support request there. Sorry about the hand off.

@bornoore – Please open up a new thread as well.

    Thank you!

I don’t have a SPAM problem, so having been “handed off” twice to people who can’t read what a question says —-I’ll have to go outside word press for an answer –
    Thanks a bunch!

If you don’t have a spam problem, perhaps the reason you’re not getting an answer is, you’re posting in spam threads?
