Spam Comments

I didn’t used to get any spam on my blog that got through as a legimtimate comment and now I am getting as many as 10 a day. Not only is it time-consuming to have these spam comments waiting for approval so that I have to sift through them, but worse is that I get 10 emails notifying me of them. I know I can opt not to get the emails but then I won’t know when I have real comments. I tried changing my password but that didn’t help. Why are you letting all this spam through?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

In order to teach our spam filter, Akismet, which comments are spam, you must make sure to mark them as spam, rather than delete them. Once Akismet “learns” which comments to filter, you should not receive email notifications about them. These spam comments should be caught be your spam filter.

We also recommend blacklisting any user that you believe to be a spammer on your site:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#comment-blacklist

You’ll find that tool very handy in keeping spammers at bay, and keeping them from wasting your time.

Unfortunately, spammers are insidious and smart…and they come and go in waves. When new ones appear, we rally to battle their presence on our users’ sites, and we ask that you mark items as spam and use your blacklist in order to let us know you’re being preyed upon.

The upside of having an established blog is a greater number of readers, the downside is that it makes you more attractive to spammers.

Please use the tools I’ve mentioned above and let me know how it works for you. If you receive spam from commenters you’ve blacklisted, please let us know asap. These people should not be getting through to you.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks much.

Unfortunately, your reply is not very helpful. Of course I mark all spam comments as spam. They do not come from any one source so there is no black list option. I have had a very popular blog for quite a while, maybe three years, and this phenomena is recent, maybe the last three months. There has to be a problem with the system because five to ten comments a day getting through the spam filter to me does not seem like it would be acceptable. Before now I would very rarely get one.

I am dismayed that you haven’t given me any further help on this problem. Today I got 15 emails announcing comments on my blog and every single one was spam. If you employ Akismet to block spam, then it is not doing its job. Something in the system, which worked quite well until recently, has broken down.

    Hi there,

Sorry about the delay. All staff was at our yearly annual meetup and returned today. If you are marking the same posts as spam and the same spammers are still getting through that is a problem. At this point it will be best to talk to our Akismet team directly as they will be able to dip in deeper:

    Sorry about the inconvenience.
