Spam Comments from Unfriendly Reader

I have been getting spam comments– personal, obnoxious, and ridiculous– from two unfriendly readers to my blog, up to 30 per day. I’ve marked every one as spam– they use the same name and e-mail every time, but WordPress has yet to mark them comments accordingly. How do I block these users or subsequent users from my blog?
I managed to block them from e-mailing me, but their blog comments are public and as they are in a different time zone than I, so I wake up every morning to an inbox full of spite.
It’s taking a real toll on my energy level and motivation. I would so appreciate your help.

That they are offensive does not mean they are spam. That is why this is not working. Don’t label them Spam.
Delete the comments and in future you have the option of banning comments from those people. Go to Options–>Discussion and put their username in the blacklist box down at the bottom.

Just for clarification, is spam necessarily from an automated source? If the offensive nature of the comments doesn’t make them spam, surely the fact that one person comments 30 times in the course of a day makes them spammish?

Raincoaster, since we’re here, can you tell me the difference between deleting a comment and “unapproving” it? Is the long-term result different?

Spam and offensiveness are not related. Spam may be human-generated. 30 comments is annoying, but woudn’t in my estimation make them spam; the point is whether or not they are doing this to anyone else or just you. If they’re making comments on other blogs, it’s not right that you deprive those bloggers of those comments. A personal attack is not necessarily spam, however repetitive it may be.

The difference between marking a comment as spam and deleting it is substantial. You are training Akismet to bury that commenter’s remarks on every blog which has Akismet installed. So, long-term, there is a large difference between deleting a comment and marking it as spam.

Hmm, I’m not sure I understand the difference, but I appreciate your efforts.
(And as a note, one of these people has gone to other blogs in my genre spreading offensive comments. Not spam, but certainly negative and inappropriate as they contained no other intent but to slander me. Also, that’s 30 comments a day per user, not just 30 comments in general.)
