Spam comments on image attachment pages
-
Hello there, I have one post that gets inundated with spam comments and I can’t seem to prevent them (http://bitesizedtravel.ca/2014/02/14/valentines-day-favourite-photos-love-locks-on-the-brooklyn-bridge/). I’ve shut off comments on the post, but comments are still coming up on the attachment page for the individual image files.
Originally, I had an image gallery that linked the individual images to attachment pages, so I deleted that gallery and went in an recreated the gallery with unlinked images. However, I’m still getting spam comments on attachment pages.
I have the strictest setting for spam filtering in place and have gone through the available settings, but I’m run up against a wall.
Since this only affects one post, my remaining idea is to delete the images and replace them with a new single image instead of the gallery, but other than that, I’m out of ideas – any suggestions?
Thanks

Attachment pages allow commenting if you’ve enabled commenting for your entire site.
For the short term-you can turn off commenting on that image by editing it to disallow commenting. From the Media Library click the Edit button on that image and in the Discussion module uncheck allow comments and allow backtracks and save your changes. http://gammagirl.wordpress.com/2013/03/01/comments-and-images/
In the long term, in order turn off commenting on Attachment pages you can turn off commenting for your entire site and then allow comments on a post-by-post basis for newly published posts. This will only help with new posts, but if you upload lots of images, changing this setting may be worthwhile.

The other question is, are these comments getting through Akismet and appearing on your blog or are they being held in your spam folder?
If the former, then there is a good chance you’ve unknowingly approved a spam comment in the past on your post or on your site. To educate yourself on the anatomy of a spam comment, I suggest:
5 things every blogger should know about spam: http://akismet.com/how/#gs2
http://en.support.wordpress.com/unwanted-comments/Please mark spam as spam and then you can delete them in bulk from the Spam folder. Marking them as spam also helps teach Akismet.

Thank you for the follow up and the suggestion. I’ve generally had a very good experience with Akismet and blocking spam elsewhere, it’s just this specific post and the images attached to it. Thanks again for the suggestion, I’m going to give it a try!
