Spam 'Likes'

How do I delete ‘likes’ from my blogs that are spam? ‘Divine’ and ‘1Guy’ have liked some of my pages but when I click onto their standard gravatar image they are just advertising Gravatar site! I think this is spam and would rather not have their ‘likes’. Can you help?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • You cannot delete likes or remove followers. The only way to prevent people from liking your posts is to turn off likes and even they they’ll be able to like your posts via the pop-up window in the Reader. The other option is to set your site to private so they can’t see it at all, but then no one else will be able to either.

  • Also, they’re not advertising gravatar, but I can understand why you think so. Clicking on the picture icon at likes takes you to the person’s gravatar profile. I see in Divine’s case that’s as far as you can go, but 1Guy has a link to his blog on his profile. I had a quick look at it and he seems legit. He just doesn’t have a picture uploaded to his gravatar profile. He blogs about his journey to healthy living, so I can see why he might be genuinely interested in your blog.

If you don’t want the gravatar logo to display on your blog you can change it under Settings ->Discussion. Right at the bottom are the different options for displaying gravatars for people who don’t have pictures uploaded.

wow, thank you Kokkieh, I really appreciate your response and providing me with a new understanding. Best wishes.

  • You are very welcome. There are definitely spam likers out there (I did a whole post on them once), but they tend to of the “make money blogging” variety and like your site simply so you’ll visit theirs. They are irritating, but nothing we can do about them. If they are on wordpress.com you can report them, but most of them are self-hosted, so not bound by the terms of service here.

yes, i am fed up too of fake likers and speedy likers.. The moment you post something, a like appears! well omg! how fast they read – i don’t think. There have been a few posts on people who like yours just so you go over and like theirs. They never leave comments and most likely they don’t even read your posts. They are irritating.. I have contacted some of them to say, I know their game but they come back.. Don’t like their posts, and stop following their blogs. This is the only option. When people are not willing to leave a small comment, if only a few words on well done, then don’t bother with them. That is what I am doing now.. These people are greedy egocentric and very much on a par with slugs.. Just don’t bother with them. eve

Agreed. Best option is to not reward them with pageviews. I never click through on likes, only on follow and real comments. And don’t fall in the trap of following everyone who follows you. This isn’t Twitter.

If you do click through the Likes and discover they are spammy, like @kokkleh pointed out, and if they are WordPress.COM sites you can report the content.

Click on the blog name in the top left nav bar, a drop down menu will open and scroll to “Report This Content.” In the text box give specific examples of why you think the site is spam. If it is determined to be a violation of Terms of Service, and the offending site can be suspended.

The thing is many of these spam-likers have legit blogs, but they scroll down the reader liking as many posts as they can without actually reading anything, hoping to attract visitors to their own sites. They’re not violating the ToS, but they are being very uncool.

I’m very discretionary about reporting any site, it has to be an obvious spammy “Get rich quick” scam before I go to those extremes. I also know that some people set up WordPress accounts for the access and not to have a site themselves. It’s just due diligence if you want a public site. I still suspect any Likes that show up almost simultaneously with publication. That seems a bit trollish too.

I don’t dwell on spam-likers. I cannot see into the mind of anyone clicking a like button and know whether or not they actually appreciate the content in a post or not. Some make me very suspicious because they have commercial sites listed on their Gravatar pages. However, In the final analysis likes may make us feel warm and fuzzy but likes, follows, reblogs aren’t page view stats, and they aren’t comments.

I’d like to manage my followers list by keeping it up to date so I can have some confidence in the numbers of followers reflected in my site stats. The ability to delete likes that I feel are insincere isn’t as important to me as Follower Management is.
