Spam new follower notifications

Hello :)
Since Sunday I’ve received 10 emails saying new folks are following my blog. However all of the email addresses look like they’re from spammers in this format:
(email visible only to moderators and staff)
They all have the outlook domain, and all have the string of random letters.
I’d like to continue to receive notifications of new followers, but have changed my Discussion Settings whilst this is happening.
Do you have any idea what’s going on and how I can stop these apparently meaningless notifications?

This issue has been identified by the WordPress.com team and a staff has issued an official comment about this here.
They’re working on fixing this.
In the meantime, if you are uncomfortable with any of them following your site, you can remove your email followers on this page.

Hello @mandyhaywood First of all, please understand that your account and site are safe and you’ve done the smart thing to disable email notifications of new followers until this issue is resolved.
You’ll want to read the additional Staff response that @strikebuys pointed to at https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/weird-followers/page/2?replies=49#post-3064066 It’s also my understanding from this Staff reply, they are working to remove those spam followers directly from WordPressdotcom so you don’t have to. However, if you feel more comfortable removing them manually, you can do so following our support guide here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/followers/#how-to-remove-a-follower
Staff also advised in that thread that they will provide updates to this issue there. If you would like to receive email updates on that topic, you can subscribe to that thread by clicking on the Subscribe to Topic link in that thread’s sidebar. Thanks.
