Spam not being caught by Akismet

    Has anyone else noticed an increase in spam that’s not being caught by Akismet? I’ve gone from manually marking one or two comments as spam every couple of months to marking 3-6 a day. The increase has happened in past 7-10 days and is getting irritating.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Yep, same here. Just keep marking them Spam so that Akismet learns from it.

    On the other side of this, Akismet says that it has blocked 21 spam from my blog and only gave me the opportunity to confirm one…and it wasn’t. Can I find those 21 blocked ones to see if they were spam?

    The very worst of all spam is never presented to us as it’s the kind that contains malicious software and can bring down the whole platform.

    Akismet is still catching the spam and throwing it into my spam queue, but whereas I was getting maybe two or three a day that I had to confirm or delete, I woke up this morning to find 66 spam comments waiting for me and have had a handful more come in in the few minutes since then.

    Frankly, this is not a big feat. If the forum searchbox is consulted you will find more stated by Staff but it really boils down to the same thing. You have a spam button – please use it.

    Just keep marking them Spam so that Akismet learns from it.

    Yes, I’m well aware that I have to keep marking Spam so Akismet learns from it. I’ve been doing just that for years.
    My specific point was that the amount of spam being missed by Akismet is increasing—and has increased significantly in the past 7-10 days. Is there a reason for the surge? Or a reason why Akismet has suddenly fallen back from its usual high standard?

    @stonehead
    Hello there. Long time no speak. :) An increase from marking 1 – 2 as spam daily to 3 – 6 daily is not what I consider to be significant. I mark many, many more than that as spam every day here on my wordpress.com free hosted blog. And when it comes to my wordpress.org install I’m experiencing 75 or more every day.

    What’s happening out there that has increased the amount of spam we receive that doesn’t get detected is that there are now people being paid to create spam comments, in addition to the bot spam. Then there is the Autoblog pingback spam and Trackback spam as well. Have you read this?

    State of Web Spam

    The thing to remember is that spammers are always changing their tactics and switching to different hosts and using different domain names and such to get around the spam filters. When they do that it takes the spam filters a while to catch up to them, but they do and then it starts all over again with the spammers changing things.

    You should feel lucky. Over the past couple months I’ve been getting around 300 per day (one day nearly 1000). For a while I was having to “spam” about 50 to 75 per day that were missed, but now the filter has caught up to them and they all end up in my spam filter (one or two slip by from time to time). Those all end up in my spam filter for my review.

    Just remember that spammers change tactics regularly to try and get around the spam filters, and it always takes the filters a little while to catch up with them. It is a continuing cycle.

    @TSP
    I wondered how long it would be before you posted. LOL :D

    P.S. This is what I’m hearing from my readers who have wordpress.ORG installs. I now use the G.A.S.P. plugin (Growmap Anti-Spam Plugin) that stops bots cold from bot comment spam. just a little check box that you click when commenting that confirms you’re a real person and not a spammer! Simple and effective, and I hardly ever get bot spam. However, human spam is a whole different issue. It requires manual moderation.

    Yeah I use bad behavior on my self-hosted blog as a first level of defense and it typically intercepts an average of 700 to 1000 per week. When things drop off, I disable it, and when they start to pick back up I enable it again.

    If you choose to test GASP do let me know what you experience. ;)
