In the fight against SPAM, WordPress has done a good job, but now the SPAM on my site id getting through via “TRACKBACKS”. I don’t know how they are doing it, but I wanted to give you guys the heads up. I’d rather not go to moderation of comments because of SPAM

    So….

You want to fight it but you don’t want to fight it?

For the past week now spammers have been trying to get their stuff on my site in various ways that has slipped by askismet. This is not surprising considering the methods they use such as the one above and also by sending in a phony baloney comment on an old post.

It’s always recommended that comments on older posts be closed and I’ll be doing this very shortly. As for incoming comments all of mine are moderated and that has saved my blog from being spammed many times over each day. I check out every incoming link before I post it to my blog.

This is how I look at it. If I had a guard dog on duty protecting my livestock I’d have to feed the dog and give it proper vet care. I would also have to keep my gates closed and my fences in good repair. And I’d have to keep an eye on everyone coming and going through the gates. In other words the guard dog and would become a protection team.

Keeping spam out of my blog is analogous to this. It means that akismet has a job to do and so do I. Having the guard dog doesn’t mean I can open all the gates and not bother to mend the fences.

Seems that the spammers are out in force over the last 24 hours. A lot of it is ending up in my moderation que. I guess Akismet hasn’t learned who these spammers are yet but I hope it catches up.

At least it is getting stopped (a few have slipped thru as trackbacks) but it is annoying.

The spammers have gone absolutely nuts. For example I found out something that really irked me. I have a url http://timethief.wordpress.com and a spammer now has a url with only one letter different, it’s an “s” after the word “word” and before the word “press”.
I have other blogs and it’s the same story there too. I have the url http://bloggersblurt.wordpress.com and a spammer now has a url with only one letter different, it’s an “s” after the word “word” and before the word press”.
I have not provided links for obvious reasons. These folks get paid by the click. The spam that is being sent to my legitimate url’s is being sent from the spammers “mirror” type urls.
    ARGGGHHH! A curse on spammers.

P.S. THREE CHEERS FOR AKISMET FOR DOING SO WELL!

Someone bought my domain name a couple of weeks ago and I had checked over a year ago to make sure no one had my name in .com, .org, .net, etc.

Not sure what you’re looking at Nosy since I still have them marked as being available.

Yes, that looks like the same issue for sure. I’ve also been getting a ton of it (mostly from a .org address) but Akismet has been catching it, thankfully.

All I can suggest is clearing your browser and doing a forced reload of the page, then trying to edit it. I’m having some weird difficulties working on the blog today, and the two issues might be related. Support is closed till tomorrow for some reason.

    Oh, yeah. That’s spam. :)

Follow this link. It will give an error if anyone else tried it.

When you pull up the comment for editing, you should mark it as spam under the Advanced title and then click on the Edit Comment button.

    Hope this helps,

I am receiving incoming links from spam sites, which are disgusting. Is there a way to report them or can one do anything about them? My best guess is no, but still wanted to ask.

  • Unknown's avatar

the only thing you can do is contact the hosts of the spam sites.

  • Unknown's avatar

And then they will have my email too to spam :) Thanks judy for the response!

  • Unknown's avatar

No, judy is talking about the hosts, not the spammers.
