Spam numbers decreasing

  I decided to leave spam in the folder for a bit. I thought that possibly if a spammer could not detect that his spam had been deleted he would not send another- I wanted to see if there was less spam that way. I thought I would let it drift to 100 then delete the lot. But now the number of spam messages in my folder is reducing, without me deleting any of it. How could this be?
