Spam on posts closed to comments

I like to scan through the Akismet spam captures to see if there are any legitimate comments caught there, but lately the spam has become so much more vile I hate to look at it. I know it self-deletes in something like 15 days, but I like to delete it every day. I had read in a couple of non-WP blogs a tip that you could cut down on how much spam you get by closing comments on older posts. So I went through the first couple of months of my archives and closed comments on most individual posts. But when I look through my spam and spot-check the “View post” link on the individual spam comments, there are still some coming in on posts for which I have closed comments. They are not making it through to the blog, no worries there — it’s caught by Akismet. But I am wondering how a spam comment can even come through to Akismet on a post that’s closed to comments?

A lot of the spam I have been getting has been by way of trackbacks – they are using this to get around the block on comments. If you disallow pings / trackbacks as well this might help.

It should. Over in wp.org land, they usually suggest deleting those files that control trackbacks so turning them off should get you the same resolution.
