Spam Popups on social media links
-
Hi. I’m getting reports from multiple people that when they try accessing my site from a social media platform, such as facebook they get a spam popup. These popups include pornography and all kinds of things I don’t want the readers to hit when they go to my website. I’ve performed all kinds of scans and none of them find any malware. They all also tell me that my site is in low risk.
The site is: http://www.kiwi.is
For some reason I only get this reported through mobile. Desktop seems to be fine. I’ve seen other threads here similar to this but they all eneded in some advertiser being blocked. Is this a known issue? why does it happen and how can it be prevented? -
Hi –
This is a very understandable request and I will try and help. From what I can see, it looks like the site is not on WordPress.com. It is running a stand alone WordPress installation which is different.
See here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Help with the WordPress installation comes from https://wordpress.org/support/
I checked to see if the site was enrolled with WordAds but it is not coming up. Have you turned off that plugin? If so, turn it back on so we can gather some more details needed to track down the errant ad (if it is ours).
Ask the folks that are having this issue to take a screen shot before they click and after they click on the ads. We need to gather as much detail as possible to track them down. Ad title, name, product, etc… We also need to know which browsers, operating systems this is happening in.

Ahh sorry. I see now I’m posting on WordPress.com didn’t realise this. Yes I should probably post this on wordpress.org instead.
This WordAds plugin what does it do? I didn’t have it installed but I can install it and turn it on if it helps with debugging. -
There’s no need to install the WordAds plugin unless you want to run our Ads on your site. It won’t help with debugging though, because we aren’t connected to your site. Does that make sense? I think posting at https://wordpress.org/support/ is the best option.

Hi.
I am getting reports that a pop up add is coming up when trying to click through a social media link of my blog http://www.tysonhannah.wordpress.com. Last night this wasn’t an issue and seems to have only started this evening. This pop up claims to be from amazon and there is no way around it when trying to view the site, leaving readers unable to view the site. I have checked on my own phone and it has happened to me too (when I am not logged in to wordpress). Please can you help me? How do I resolve this problem? -
Hi @hantyson. I think you are getting the same virus I had. Install WPDefender right now. It will help you detect which files are infected. It takes a bit for it to analyse everything but it is very helpful. In my case this was a virus which had infected multiple files. I had to cleanup loads of files and delete old themes etc.

Thanks for the reply @doddi620279334 ! Is WPDefender free on WordPress.com? As a student running this blog for my own entertainment above anything else, I can’t afford to splash out mega cash! Thanks.
-
Hi, @hantyson
a) the real URL of your site is https://tysonhannah.wordpress.com/ (without the “www”).
b) where are the social media link in your blog? -
Yeah no worries. It’s free. But sorry I had the wrong name. It’s Wordfence
It’s a plugin and the free version is more than enoughWordfence Security – Firewall, Malware Scan, and Login Security

@doddi620279334 Sorry, but you’re confusing the WordPress.com platform with the WordPress.org platform, as staff-zinnia told you above:

Hi, @galois
There aren’t any, what I meant to say was when people are clicking on the link via their social media. Which is actually now irrelevant as it is happening when people are accessing it via their phones, regardless of whether or not it’s via social media.
@doddi620279334, okay great thanks, I will check it out! -
Hi there,
I don’t seem to be able to replicate it on my phone. Can you please send me a screenshot to check if it’s on our end or not?
Here’s how to take a screenshot:

Hi, thank you for the reply.
This is the media
, it’s also uploaded as the most recent blog post. Thank you!
-
Hi hantyson,
Thanks for the screenshot. It would be great if you could also send me the following information:
- Which device and browser are people using when the ads appear?
- Does the pop-up appear only when visiting a particular post or page?
- Their IP address (they can find this on on supportdetails.com).
I’ll pass these details on to the ads team so they can take a closer look.

Hi Gemma,
Thanks for the reply. As far as I am aware it is happening when following a facebook link, and searching it on safari/google but only on Apple mobile devices.
When searching the blog on the internet and clicking on it, there is now a different but similar ad (i will attach a screenshot) as well as the one previously shown. This happens when searching and finding the main blog site on google and when following any link to the blog post ‘November of Noise’ – https://wordpress.com/view/tysonhannah.wordpress.com – but as far as I’m aware, no other blog link is affected.
This leads me to think this is a new thing as I only posted the November blog on 5th of this month.
It happens to everyone trying to access these on an Apple mobile device.

Thank you!
