Spam seemingly from wordpress

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, not sure if this is the right place, I am sure you will let me know~

Hello, I have spam email, supposedly generated by an unverified visitor- I am sure this is very familiar.

The ISP used belongs to a Shanghai hosting company also known for hosting spammy sites.

A deeper check of headers found WordPress.com is also complicit- albeit innocently via the (email visible only to moderators and staff) which I originally thought was a fake or spoof.

My problem is, if I go head and report this as spam, is it going to bounce back unfavourably on WordPress.
Please note, I am not suggesting WordPress is spamming me.

    Thx

  • Hi there,

    I’m not sure I understand.

What is the subject line of the email you’re referring to, and what is its FROM address? Regarding what site is this?

On what date did you receive this email?

A quick check of headers shows this:
Should I go ahead and report these as SPAM?
The report will go to Automattic etc?

Whilst the IP Address: 210.16.188.124 is traced to a Shanghai hosting company.
    Hope this helps.
Please ask any more specific questions- I will do my best to answer them.

Ahhh, emails are redacted- hopefully you can read them at your end though.
If not please let me know, we can try another way.

  • These emails are not spam.

They’re notifications sent by our system when people submitted the contact form on your site at https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/wordpress-importer/. “Unverified visitor” simply means these people who submitted the form were not logged into a WordPress.com username account at the time they submitted the form.

You can also view these contact form submissions in your dashboard at https://aim2dchinabusinessnews.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=feedback

The submissions themselves do appear to be spam, and you can mark them as such from that page so that our system will learn to filter similar contact form submissions in future.

But the emails we sent you to notify you that someone submitted your site’s contact form are supposed to be sent for any contact form submission that makes it past our internal spam filters, and marking those emails themselves as spam will not achieve anything besides possibly having future emails we send you being spammed by your email provider.

OK, well we are nitpicking a bit here, they ARE spam, as you yourself conceded.
Not only were they not logged in, they did not actually show up as visitors in my stats. I think Google refers to this as Ghost spam.
They are just not spam from WordPress, which I also stated and the reason I did not go ahead an register them as such.

I fully understand your job is not always the easiest, but this is the second time we have spoken and on both occasions there is a certain edginess in your tone.
Please note, I specifically stated that I was not suggesting WordPress was spamming me so there is no need to be so defensive.

However, I do appreciate your help in the link to my dash and method for dealing with this stuff. That would have been my next question, you preempted me, so well done you. Thanks.

I think we can call this successfully solved.
    Regards
