spam user registrations/ log in issues

  Hi, I have been getting a huge amount of spam user registrations on my site. I would like to restrict user registration, and I looked under settings -> general for this option, but it isn’t available to me. What is the best way to get to this option? I am the website owner, but I keep getting logged out automatically, and then my password no longer works so I have to change it again every time I want to log in. I think there must be some malware affecting the site.

  Hi growersnation,

  It looks as though you are using the self hosted version of WordPress from WordPress.org.

  You would be better getting support for it at http://wordpress.org/support/

  These forums are for WordPress.com support.

  Thanks, it’s all sorted now.

  I inserted the right user entries under PhpMyAdmin on the hosting account following the guide here: http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-add-an-admin-user-to-the-wordpress-database-via-mysql/

  This enables administrator entry to the website.

  It was then possible to update the word press version, and enable restricted user registration under the general -> settings option.

  Please post to the WordPress.org support forum for issues with that site in the future. We provide support only for blogs being hosted WordPress.COM and not for WordPress.ORG software installs.

  WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate and different http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

  If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

  Hi there,

  There should be an option found in Settings -> General called “Membership” and a checkbox should be next to it to allow or not allow anyone to register. Make sure that is not checked to avoid spammy registrations. If you do not see that option you may have an outdated version of WordPress. You may download the latest version from here:
