Spamming
-
How do I know whether I have spam or not? how can I tell? this morning I got a message that definitely was not spam. so how can I tell the difference? often I’m worried I’ve deleted someones comment and lost readership due to me thinking it was spam. ….
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Generic stuff with a link is generally spam – this is spam: http://loyaltothemagisterium.wordpress.com/2010/11/13/traditionalism-and-modernism/#comment-4
Read the comments – most spam is generic – Akismet does a great job – the type of blog you have should have people making specific comments – the rest of the comments below the Spam one above were long and related to the Post –
Some spam can be a bit tricky as live people put the spam in – I don’t like links to sites that are not related or sell a lot of junk –

well I felt the comment was somewhat close to the topic at hand. At least about traditionalist etc..and that the link provided is usually what people do anyway when they comment on someones blog is it not?
Thanks for the reply. Spam can be tricky. just wondering if anyone ever got spam that was not spam.

The “Love it Visit my blog?:) ” – is too generic for me – your other comments are well thought out – I get tons of generic – this is a current one – ” It’s not always easy coming up with new content, but you really can do it well! ” with a link to a meat slicer ad – left on my Boating Safety Site – I don’t like to give them traffic by clicking on the link but once in a while I will copy the link and paste into the browser if I am not sure –
After I had some 200 Spam days and 3,000 to 4,000 Spam months (and I an not real high numbers by the way) – my tolerance level went way down –
Your blog is young so I expect you are new to running a site – just look at the comments if you are worried – ask the folks here if you are still struggling with the Spam identification – we had one poor person that came to the Forum insisting that Akismet was missing many comments – on closer look they had approved over 50% Spam!
Links to a site that sells junk is almost always a Spam comment – at least on my site – ugg boots I don’t even give a second thought to for instance, or credit cards. As spam filters get better you will see more human originated spam to try and get around the filters – the spam bots are getting better every month.
Good luck

As you say the blog is quite fresh. I’ve had the spam comments you mentioned before they are usually easy to catch and often I look for comments that at least contribute to the topic at hand.
My spam has only caught 20 odd spam comments since joining up a month ago.
Thanks for the suggestions and help.

In the case of the comment sited by auxclass above, or others as generic but linking to a ‘real’ blog:
http://loyaltothemagisterium.wordpress.com/2010/11/13/traditionalism-and-modernism/#comment-4
I would answer as politely as you did, but edit the comment to remove the link to her (his) blog. with a note that the link was removed in the answer. It might be “foolish” spam (just someone trying to promote his/her blog by randomly commenting on as many blogs as possible) or it might not be sleazy commercial spam for pay done by “a real human.” Removing the link via an edit on your part seems a good way to go. IMO
Others will likely have opinions different from mine…

Thanks Tess. I always take a wee look at that persons blog beforehand. I do not mind people having a desire to promote their blog if it is a Catholic/Christian one. But anything else really does not get my acceptance. It all depends as you say on the content of their comment.
The ”love it visit my blog” was ok because after taking a look at her fashion blog I realised that she sang in her local church choir and was just a young lassie at 15. I therefore realised it was a real comment, just lacking that contribution to the issue at hand. I’m so lenient towards that kind of thing.
Spam whether robotic or not is easy to spot. Just not the comment I mentioned at the start of this thread.
