Special characters

I’ve chosen Oxygen theme for my website amrserviss.eu; the standars fonts provided are beautiful, but the special characters, like ‘ž’ or ‘ģ’ in my language – Latvian – appear with errors. Is there a way to ensure that thet ext appears nicely?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Howdy,

I took a look at your website, and noticed from the front page that the characters mentioned seemed to be displaying OK. This screenshot shows what I see: http://d.pr/i/m4BJ

Can you please confirm whether you see the characters in that fashion, or whether you’re seeing something else?

    Hi,

They look ok in your screenshot, but not on my screen :/
Technically, the special characters have all the ‘accessories’ (the characters that are on the letter) that they should have, but the problem is that they appear in bold which is a common error with fonts that do not support special characters.

    Howdy,

I’ve tried to replicate your issue, by viewing your site on a Windows 7 computer, running Firefox 27 (which I believe is your setup), but I am still seeing the page just fine, like in my previous example.

Would you be able to provide a screenshot of what you’re seeing so that I can get an idea of the problem?

    Thanks

    Hi,

    Here’s the screenshot:

The special characters appear in bold.

    Thanks

OK, I see what you’re seeing now. It looks like these characters are falling back to a default font, and from the looks of it, I’d say it’s Arial.

The Droid Sans font fully supports these characters (as proven by my own screenshots), so there’s is something on your machine that is stopping the Droid Sans font from loading, which is then causing these characters to fall back to a font that does support them (Arial in this case).

Can you try a few things for me?

    <link rel='stylesheet' id='font-droid-sans-css' href='http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Droid+Sans&ver=20120821' type='text/css' media='all' />

    Hi,

Thanks. The funny thing is that I work from two different pc ‘machines’ and both of them show those caracters wrong, while Iphone and Ipad seem to more flexible (it’s less visible).

Now, I tried all you asked to do and here’s the outcome:

http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Droid+Sans&ver=20120821 – Do you see 6 lines of code? – Sort of. 7 if to count the bracket that has jumped down.
http://themes.googleusercontent.com/static/fonts/droidsans/v4/s-BiyweUPV0v-yRb-cjciBsxEYwM7FgeyaSgU71cLG0.woff – Are you able to navigate to and save that file? – Nope.
https://www.google.com/fonts/specimen/Droid+Sans – do all of the characters appear normal to you? – Yes, but the characters of my langugage are not there, if that matters…

    – View Page Source. Line 28 says <link rel=’stylesheet’ id=’font-droid-sans-css’ href=’http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Droid+Sans&ver=20120821′ type=’text/css’ media=’all’ />

    Many thanks,
    Maia

    Hi Maia,

Thanks for testing all of those things for me. The problem seems to be with my second question. That file is called by your theme and loads the WOFF file for Droid Sans, which is the custom font used on your blog. If you are unable to click on that link and save the file, then there must be something configured on your computer or network that is blocking that file from being loaded, resulting in the font not loading correctly.

I’m not in much of a position to investigate what could be causing that, but rest assured that I am able to see your blog correctly, and most other users should also. It just seems that there is an idiosyncrasy with your setup that is preventing you from using that WOFF file.

If there’s anything else I can help you with, please let me know.
