special characters in new block editor

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m trying to get used to using the new block editor and I can’t find the special character option anywhere. It’s on the second toolbar in the classic editor. I’m finding other things by accident, such as the word-count feature, and I’m wondering if the special characters are hidden in a secret place too.

The whole thing isn’t very user-friendly at this stage. When will it be forced upon us?

    Thanks for any help.

  • Hi there,

The WordPress.org team, who makes the WordPress software, including the new editor, chose not to include the character map in the editor, except for the classic block that shows the same controls as the classic editor itself. You can see https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/1678 for more information.

I’ve added your request there, and if enough people ask for it the might reconsider, but ultimately the decision is up to the people who make the software.

If there’s a particular special character you use regularly, the simplest option is to use the Alt-code or your operating system’s built-in keyboard shortcut for that character instead. If you’re not sure how to find that, please let me know which character you’re looking for and I can help find that out for you.

Else, you’ll either need to use the classic editor or the classic block in the new editor to have access to that tool.
