Spectrum Theme: Custom Menu, and a Q

I’ve given up with 2011; trying to get what I need with Spectrum.

My custom menu (on the menu workpage) looks just like it did at 2011, but the children are not with their parents when I open Spectrum. I find a jumbled, unsorted collection looking nothing like what I have specified on the menu workpage.
I have tried unparenting and reparenting them (hoping that would snap them to attention!); clicked save changes; still no change on Spectrum.

Also, I’d like advise re setting up the site based on pages versus posts:

I am attempting to set up a website, not a blog.

Do I create a page for each area of the school (e.g. about us, elementary, secondary, international, news, etc), with children pages for each section of related info? Or do I think of each of those areas as a *category*, and create “children” via posts in each category (e.g. the 7 bits of info under ‘about us’ would each be a post)? Could I then sticky each page/first post in a category to the home page? …

I’m envisioning a series of boxes, each with a pic and a few words or title, that when clicked on, takes you to associated info (e.g. info related to the secondary school is accessed by that picture (post?) on the home page).

Would it ultimately make any difference? I think it must, but I am having trouble figuring out what the difference would be, and which direction would best get me where I’d like to go.

    I hope that makes sense…?!

Thanks so much for the help and support here.
    It is really, really appreciated.

but the children are not with their parents when I open Spectrum.

Dropdowns to child pages from parent pages are not currently a feature of the Spectrum theme. All themes that feature a top nav menu support dropowns if you replace their standard menu with a custom menu. But only some of those themes support dropowns in their standard menu, and Spectrum isn’t one of them. So you have to create a custom menu.

There are many common errors, misunderstanding and misconceptions when creating custom menus so I recommend reading > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/

Solved the menu problem. Looks much better.

TThief: I read that while searching for an answer; I had already established a custom menu, so that wasn’t an issue. I since discovered by error, but greatly appreciate your reply.

Have you any advice/wisdom re laying out the site as all pages (parents and children) or as posts and categories?

    Thanks again.
