Spectrum Theme: problem with category widget

  • Unknown's avatar

I just changed to the Spectrum Theme at http://www.getgrounded.wordpress.com. I am having a problem with the action of the Category widget. If you see the list of categories, I have the number of posts in each one displayed. For example, “2009; Garden Year Two” has 46 posts. When I click on that category, it should display a list of the 46 posts to read. It only displays 3 posts, however, and there’s no way I can find to see the remainder. This happens on every category. Can you advise?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There are older/newer navigation tabs at the bottom of the page.

Wow, that’s not effective. As you can see on my blog, the way spectrum displays my blogroll (I wish I could single space it and remove so much ridiculous extra space), you have to scroll and scroll and scroll through much white space before you ever see the tiny “older posts” button that can be easily missed. Any way to correct this?

You know, when I read your question when you first posted, I checked your blog & only saw the three posts, too. Since I didn’t know how to solve the problem, I didn’t respond — I had thought that maybe it might be the case that there was an “older posts” link, and even though I looked for it, I didn’t see it, so you’re right that that’s not at all good — I would definitely miss your older posts and think there were only three, despite the higher number. I looked at a few of your category pages, too.

You might want to contact staff when they reopen after the weekend. I think that most people expect the “older posts” link to be immediately beneath the last visible post, not all the way at the bottom of the page.

I’ve since changed the setting that indicates “how many posts per page” to be much higher, so that more posts show up when you look at the categories. Unfortunately, that also means that my home page blogposts are also now extremely lengthy, which I didn’t really want. I would like to only show 1 or 2 posts on the home post page, but when someone clicks on the categories or tags, I want it to fill up the page as necessary to display the excepts, and the “older post” tag should be at the end of the last excerpt, not all the way at the bottom of the screen.

Also, I wish that the blogroll and other widget links weren’t formatted to be so widely spaced and take up WAY too much screen real estate down the page.

In most themes what you set to display on your front page (full posts) or not is what you get in the Archives and Categories pages. Please see here for a theme by theme breakdown > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/03/25/full-posts-in-archive-pages/

In all blogs regardless of themes we can set the number of posts to display on the front page here > Settings > reading and we can set full or summary display in the RSS Feeds.

In any post or page you can split content in several ways. The most common is to insert “the more tag”. See all option here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/

If you wish to have complete control over a blog, the ability to upload themes and plugins, and the ability to edit themes and templates and change functionality then your option is to hire a web host and get a free software install from WordPress.ORG and self host it.

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

I’m very aware that most posts have differing settings from the main page and the category excerpt pages. However, changing that setting in the “settings/Reading” area is the only way I could get it to display more than 3 excerpts. I believe Spectrum has some issues that other themes have resolved. It’s a shame, because I like the banners and headers that it uses. So thank you for your thoughts, but it doesn’t resolve this particular issue. I have other blogs that are self hosted on wordpress.org, and am very familiar with the differences. I’m just trying to resolve some particular issues that occur on the free Spectrum theme.

By the way, I just found this sentence on the first link that you suggested:
    2. The number of posts per page is set in Settings > Reading. Currently that setting applies to all post pages: you cannot set a certain number for the main page and a different number for category or archive pages.

es indeed I was aware of that and that’s why I posted the link above. I’m sorry you are disappointed. If you think our Themes Staff needs to take a look at Spectrum then please note that the support form will be reactivated again at 12PM UTC on Monday 4th July. I will flag this thread so it gets moved to the Themes Forum where you can communicate with Themes Staff then.
