Spellcheck feature
-
My spellcheck feature has disappeared. Did you remove it? And how do I get it back?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
Mine disappeared too. Is this only happening on the admin editor (which I find easier to use) or is one of the new editors doing the same thing?

Hi there,
Yes, we have an open report currently. We have Several users are unable to see the proofreading icon because we have removed the at the deadline software:
https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/28550
We’re in the process of discussing new options for proofreading. Thank you!
-
Why would you remove it without having a new option to immediately replace it? Reinstate the old one while you work on the new one. This is a real inconvience! #proofreader #spellcheck

Hi tom60 –
We appreciate your feedback on the spell checking tool. Have you already ruled out using the one built in to your browser and/or computer? Most modern browsers and operating systems now include their own spell checkers.
-
Count me as one of the “several users” who cannot see the proofreading icon.
Any idea as to when the discussions for new proofreader options will be over, and a proofreader icon returned?
-
fully agree with Tom and others. real nuisance that there is no more spell checker!
hans -
So basically, let’s fix it and **** it up for absolutely no good reason. You want a repeat subscription or not, WordPress.com?
-
BTW, it’s missing from the classic CMS editor as well as the annoying new “block editor”. What the hell are you playing at?
-
Wordpress should have sent out an email telling users. We have all been wasting time trying to work out what has gone wrong. Very annoying
-
Hi everyone,
As staff-zinnia and staff-doublebassd mentioned, we have passed on your feedback to our developers. They are discussing possible alternatives but we don’t have any more news at the moment.
-
How can you seriously run a blogging platform, whether people are paying for it or not, without a spellchecker function? What universe do wordpress.com developers live in???
-
I agree with @shanefdowling about WordPress sending out an email. I, too, wasted hours trying to get the proofreader function back. I thought that it was something I had done to cause it to disappear.
-
Thanks for the feedback, and we’re really sorry you spent time trying to figure out where it went. We can file a suggestion. Would it be alright if we suggest a notification icon or something along those lines instead of an email?
-
@supernova – It does not matter whether it is an email or notification icon. As long as members are notified about a problem so they do not waste time trying to solve what they cannot solve. Thanks.

I don’t know if I have a spellchecker in my browser or now – never heard of such a thing. I do know that I paid money for my wordpress.com account and that this was partly on the basis of great features like a spellchecker being made available. Now I have to write posts in Libre Office to spell-check them there … and this causes problems because I need to paste into wordpress as plain text (otherwise there’s a plethora of code to strip out manually) and so embedding hyperlinks becomes overly complex.
I still find it odd that “developers” on a blogging platform did not foresee a problem with a spellcheck program and make contingency for it. What are these “developers” actually hired to do?
Is this an “equal opportunities” issue dreamt up by the “developers” where none of us must be seen to spell correctly and therefore disadvantage bloggers living with dyslexia???

What browser are you using? Have you checked under Settings/Preferences? In Firefox it’s under Preferences ->General ->Language and Appearance. In Chrome it’s under Advanced Settings ->Privacy and Security ->Sync and Google Services. Safari should have it enabled by default, since it’s a feature built directly into Mac OS itself, but if not you can enable it by right-clicking on any text field and selecting Check Spelling.

There has not been any problem with the spell checker. We removed the feature as it has become a bit redundant lately. Most major web browsers have some form of this already built-in, and free extensions like https://www.grammarly.com/ are making huge strides in the field, so we’re removing this feature from our product to avoid duplicating features that others already do much better.
