Spellcheck feature

What on earth are you playing at? No warning and a stupid decision in the first place. I write straight into my posts, which are long with lots of images, hyperlinks etc I NEED the spellchecker because my typing isn’t 100% brilliant.
Using one in the browser is NOT an acceptable substitute.
Put it back please!
It was bad enough when you took away the option to have others comments/proffread before – again with no warning. This is even worse

I appreciate your concerns about the spell check feature no longer being updated, but I found the spell/writing check to be extremely useful and used it all the time.
Since WordPress is primarily intended for writing, I would not consider such a feature as optional. Thanks

I can’t speak for anyone else but I found the free version of Grammarly to be more of a distraction than a help. It didn’t show what words or grammar were wrong unless I hovered my cursor over it, but it did have this attention-taking number on the bottom. And unless you pay for it the program doesn’t show you all the errors when you clicked on the number. After The Deadline, updated or not, worked a lot better for me and having a back-up for Firefox’s spell check is a welcome thing.

Do I love WordPress Yes. Am I annoyed that the WordPress spell check in the Classic editor has been removed. You betcha I do.
Can we please have an answer as to when a proof reading/spell check feature will be returned?

There is no answer, as there are no immediate plans to return such a feature. As mentioned earlier in this thread, our developers are looking into the possibility of adding an alternative, but if something like that happens it will likely be a third party service that we’ll integrate in WordPress.com, rather than something we built ourselves.

I am puzzled by the lack of understanding that the absence of a spell check is a BIG issue that needs to be addressed with priority!
Also do not understand the suggested “solution” that browsers have a spell checker built in. Do you mean that I should copy my draft first into an email or word document to spell check and then paste it back into the blog post?? You cannot be serious.

All major web browsers have a spell-checker built-in so there’s no need to copy and paste your blog post in another application just to check for errors. Here’s how to enable your browser’s spell-checker:

I have spellchecker enabled on Firefox (according to your and Firefox’s directions) but it doesn’t seem to catch spelling mistakes. It never has for me. I realise that for some the button might seem redundant, but why remove it when clearly lots of people are still using it (and I’m sure many more than complained on these forums). Why not keep it for those that need it, why do I have to go pasting my words into different places just to double-check the spelling?? Does it cost money or something to keep this feature available…That’s probably it isn’t it, it will later be something you have to pay for in the premium worldpress service…I don’t like the new owners they just keep taking things away (daily post now this) :(
Can anyone still help me with why Firefox won’t spellcheck when it’s been enabled for a long time on my laptop, I keep restarting and updating but nothing makes it work :(

It costs time of developers to maintain it, time that they could be spending improving or developing our core features, and those developers have to be paid salaries.
Spell checkers are a speciality product, and it’s not something we specialise in. The WordPress.com spell checker was developed years ago when there didn’t exist any alternatives yet. Since then things have changed and a lot of other companies have started specialising in this, which led to the decision on our end to step back from the field and focus instead on the things we do specialise in.
I don’t like the new owners they just keep taking things away
WordPress.com still belongs to the same person who started this company fourteen years ago. It has never been sold, and there are no “new owners”.

I use Firefox exclusively for work and personal stuff, and the spell check works well on my end, but I don’t know Firefox settings well enough to help you troubleshoot this.

My browser spellcheck is very inadequate, catching nearly nothing. /Will a new spellcheck feature be added?

Between WP.com libtards jumping on the Silicon Valley censorship bandwagon – deleting Jon Rappoport’s blog was unforgivable – and its coders apparently being unable to appreciate the functionality aspect of good design (especially that truly awful “block editor”), I must admit I’m now past caring.
Having spent a LOT of money on WP upgrades across two accounts over about a decade, I don’t intend giving wordpress.com any more financial support in future.
WP.com was a great resource for many years, and I thank the adults who used to run it for that. Now it seems the company’s being steered by members of the coming idiocracy.
