Spellchecking

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I tried out the new Gutenberg editor, which I liked. But I can no longer find out where to spell check.

    Thanks,

    Wes

    Hello @wespomeroy,

Spellcheck is auto applied to a Gutenberg block. When I type a misspelled word on purpose, a red underline showed up. And in my case, I used a paragraph block.

You can always insert a classic block if you prefer to have the spellcheck button.

    I hope this helps! :)

Alas, this is not working for me (the auto-applied part). I typed this sentence into a default Gutenberg block:

Ths is an exmple of some mad spellling which is not gettink picked up

Alas, nothing underlines. There is no change to the text at all. I’m using the Chrome browser Version 71.0 on a PC.

Hmm, I’m not sure what the issue could be. I took the same text you supplied and pasted it into my test site. It picked up the misspelled items. I’m using Chrome on a PC as well.

I’ve tagged your post with ‘modlook’ and you should hear from staff soon.

In the meantime, have you tried another browser to see if there is still an issue? Just trying to rule out browser extensions as a potential issue.

Trying it in other browsers hmm? Why on earth would I try that insanely obvious and constructive thing? :)

It worked in other browsers (of course), specifically Firefox and Edge. It’s clearly an issue with Chrome. When I figure out what it is, I’ll add one more comment here in the hopes of helping others who share my tentative fate.

    Ha! :)

Well, I’m glad to hear you were able to figure out that it’s browser specific.

Please do post again with what you find out. I’m sure other users would appreciate knowing (myself included).

    Thanks!

I figured it out, and it was painful.

It wasn’t a problem with WordPress. It was with Chrome itself. It appears that the Chrome settings which had been synced to and stored on my Google user profile were somehow corrupted and messing things up.

When I installed Chrome fresh, didn’t log into any Google account with it, and went to WordPress – Spellcheck worked. “Signed In” to the browser and it broke.

    To fix it I:

    1. Took note of my installed Chrome plugins and exported my bookmarks
    2. Click on the three dots in the extreme upper right of Chrome
    3. Went to “Settings”
    4. Clicked on the “Sync” section right at the top (which expanded a large section)
    5. Clicked on the subtle “Manged synced data in Google Dashboard” link towards the bottom of that expanded section
    6. Clicked the “Reset Sync” button at the bottom of the web page that popped up
    7. Uninstalled Chrome from my machine, making sure to click the box that removes all history”
    8. Reinstalled Chrome

Maybe I was the edge case. If not, hope this helps someone!

Sorry to hear the trouble you went through to diagnose the browser. Doesn’t sound fun, but SO glad you were kind enough to leave a thorough run down of what worked for you in order to help others.

    Appreciate the info @wespomeroy!!

And no problem – anytime @kokkieh!
