Spike in hacking attempts?

A friend of mine has had a wordpress site for about 5 years now, with WordFence installed.

Recently he’s noticed a spike in hackers trying to get into his site, there’s at least one a day – from Poland, England…etc.

Has this been happening to anyone else?

What is the address of the WordPress site you are having issues with?

    Hi

    globalgumshoe.com is his site.

Wordfence (free version) keeps sending him reports that people in Ukraine, England – all over! – are trying to log in.

Here’s an email alert he received a couple of days ago:

A user with IP address 88.208.217.22 has been locked out from the signing in or using the password recovery form for the following reason: Exceeded the maximum number of login failures which is: 20. The last username they tried to sign in with was: ‘globalgumshoe’
    User IP: 88.208.217.22
    User hostname: server88-208-217-22.live-servers.net
    User location: Gloucester, United Kingdom

The site you are having issues with is a WordPress.org self-hosted site. This forum is for WordPress.com hosted sites. The correct forum for WordPress.org self-hosted sites is http://wordpress.org/support. You will need to go there and create a separate account for the support forums there.

You may also want to contact Wordfence directly for more help on understanding the reports and what to do about them.

For more on the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org please see this article: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
