Spike in traffic
-
Hi,
I’m trying to find out why I’m getting a large spike in traffic. I was averaging about 20 views a day for a month and now it went up 200 views in yesterday and now growing. I have been getting mainly hits when people have been searching for “worlds strongest man”. Not too sure what the deal is. I thought it was a mistake. It could be nothing. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’ve had the same issue. Same averages as you and today it shot up to 500 pg views. I emailed support and got a response that said essentially “don’t worry about it, the internet can be unpredictable at times.”
I thought it might be a search engine indexing the site. But what do I know…
-
I’ve seen a spike in page views today too, not just on my long-time blog but on a brand new one as well. Makes more sense to me that maybe there’s been a change in the way visits are counted or something, not just internet unpredictability.
-
Me too. There’s something wrong. In the last hour, I’ve received over 100. Doesn’t make sense.
-
We should all have such problems. My blog looks perfectly normal.
You might want to try using the Whosamungus widget, which shows you in realtime who’s reading your blog and what posts they’re reading.
-
Had a bitch of a time finding Whosamungus. (http://whos.amung.us/) I found their java widget. Not for us on WP.com. Even though they mention an HTML version, I could not find it. It might be available in their Pro version.

Here’s the code I am using:

I emailed http://whos.amung.us/ and I got an answer with a link to the HTML code. It worked on a Text widget.
Here’s the link I got: http://whos.amung.us/?nonjscode=true
Hope it works for you as well. Thanks raincoaster

You’re welcome. It’s a handy little thing, lets you see when in the day you have traffic spikes and to which posts. I couldn’t live without it.
-
In the last five hours my view stats have risen from 43 to 165, which is higher than I’ve EVER had in any single day. But I know that’s not a true count because StatCounter shows only 16 page hits in that period. What’s going on??? Help!
-
Honestly, people: an ISSUE is when stats go up. A PROBLEM is when they go down.
If you look at Referrers, you’ll probably see a lot more Google in there. Looks like in the last day or so Google has fixed what was formerly a bug with the way WP.com blogs were indexed.
-
Nope this is just bogus.I can sit here refreshing the page and watch my rise by the seconds! Since I posted here twenty minutes ago, my count has risen from 165 to 207. For my blog that’s only a wild dream. I just hate that now my averages will all be skewed.
-
lol … I’m with you raincoaster.

You can have third party stats programs, provided they are not javascript. The choices are found in these posts:

Why would it be “bogus?”
Believe me, both TT and I started with one hit a day. We’ve been where you are. And we know this is how blogs grow. It’s not insane, it’s not inaccurate; in fact, it appears that Google corrected something that was causing UNDERreporting of stats.
If you choose to believe that there are not 207 people in the world interested in what you have to say or likely to stumble upon it by accident, you may. You will probably be wrong, but you are entitled to be.

“I just hate that now my averages will all be skewed.”
I guess, the thing about averages is, it’s possible you’ll eventually have days that are low and everything will be back to normal. It’s something you can easily achieve by making your blog “private” for a few days, or not updating your content.
Maybe you can contact support and ask them if there’s something wrong, or maybe if they can turn your numbers back.
Wow.

I do have a third party stat program operating: StatCounter, which shows a typical hit count for me today.
I’ve had my blog for over a year, I have a small group of followers and for the last six months or so have averaged 55 hits a day. If I’ve suddenly become famous, I wish someone had let me know! :-)

“If you look at Referrers, you’ll probably see a lot more Google in there.”
What caught my eye originally was that there were no “referrers” except for maybe one or two: Twitter and a WP dashboard.
If it is a Google adjustment like raincoaster is saying, then great. But it seems more like a hiccup. I also thought that if I had 527 hits — which btw also show up on the total count although originally they didn’t as in lindacassidylewis’ case — I would have some corresponding comments.
For me it had the feel of a machine just reading every post I have.
More will be revealed…

I’m confused. What is the technical support question in this thread? Is there a technical support question at all, or has this turned the corner and become chatter … lol :D
