Spike in traffic

  • Unknown's avatar

    I don’t think it’s bogus, I think it’s the mystery of the snow…

people clicking (and telling their friends) to view the snow, or the snow playing havoc with our stats, or the statcounter counting snowflakes or ????

I began getting the spike in stats 24 hours ago in the wee hours of the morning and it hasn’t let up. Today was my second biggest day ever as far as number of hits, and not a corresponding spike in referrers.

    let it snow!

I didn’t start this thread, but my question was whether there was a problem causing this inflated count. If I just wanted a bogus visitor count, I’d have all my friends and relatives hit my blog fifty times a day.

I originally wrote support. I attach the question and their answer:

    Q:
I saw: an unusual number of visitors but no referrers or increase in
    > the total number of page views. Any idea on what’s going on?
    A:
Please don’t worry, this can happen from time to time – the internet is very unpredictable after all!

    Thanks,

    Hanni

I’m not really worried about it

    @jmadlc55

Thanks so much for posting the reply you got from staff.

  • Unknown's avatar

    You’re welcome.

I figured that the next few days will show if this was an anomaly or the first day of a true increase.

  • Unknown's avatar

Mine has been 50% off instead even with regular updates. Oh well…it’s the internet so nothing to worry about.

  • Unknown's avatar

Interesting point about the snow, but I’ve not seen anything – I’ve just chugged along as normal, pre and post snow. Re the official line, sorry, but I doubt the Internet is THAT unpredictable. Not in my experience anyway.

Nothing here, and the daily highest record is still the cut version.

But I do detect some weird stats issue as recent as my installation of free counter. I suppose we can’t really trust those stats. Even records can be changed, what can’t?

  • Unknown's avatar

I agree about the snow: it might be helpful if everyone posting here with the issue could let us know whether or not they’re using the snow.

It’s possible that people are clicking away and back or refreshing the page because the snow is freezing their computers.

I noticed yesterday that jmadlc55 and lindacassidylewis have snow, so do I…

in addition both linda and I have posts about the snow –real and virtual–which is something I felt may have contributed to rise in my stats. For example, I don’t think everyone whose referrer is via an email shows up in stats, do they? Not if they open it on a cellphone or webmail.

Today everything is back to “normal,” both in terms of number of stats I’d expect on a Sunday and the percentage of referrers, It’s still snowing on my blog though

  • Unknown's avatar

also, a friend told me that she couldn’t see the snow on her Blackberry, so people wanting to but not being able to see it may click repeatedly too

  • Unknown's avatar

Webmail clients often show up in Referrers, but not Outlook and things like that.

And snow is certainly a hot topic in the forum.

I’m going to put snow on one of my blogs and see what happens with the stats.

  • Unknown's avatar

thanks, raincoaster, that’s interesting to know about the webmail showing up in the stats but not the Outlook etc.

my only experience with anything like this is the email marketing software we use to send out e-news at my job, where it’s the opposite result: we can’t see the “opens” if the contact opens a “text only” version of the email since the tracking is done using a 1×1 pixel image. When I read the e-news on my webmail, it didn’t show up in the tracking. But it did show up if I open it in Outlook.

    As of today:

    http://raincoaster.com has no traffic spike

http://raincoastermedia.com has a BIG traffic spike, on course to do 4x the usual number of hits at least, with no referrers at all today (what’s up with that?) but lots of different search engine terms

    http://lolebrity.net has no traffic spike

http://theshebeenclub.com has a huge traffic spike. This is our busiest day ever, with more than 12 hours to go

Now, none of those blogs except raincoaster have had any new content for at least three days. And only The Shebeen Club has snow, although the spike on raincoaster media is almost identical.

Which leads us: nowhere. Still a confusing mess.

I am not using the snow.. and never have. My stats have spiked to over 500 today. My usual number is 40 to 50. Something is terribly wrong in StatsVille.

  • Unknown's avatar

    “Wrong”

    I so don’t get this.

Whatever is going on, I’m hoping it never stops. I persist in the vague notion that it’s Google-related, because I know my domain-mapped blogs were not getting properly indexed by Google until recently, but have no absolute proof of that. It WOULD explain why some blogs are seeing it.

Looks like pretty much everyone who’s seeing it has a domain mapped blog, YES?

  • Unknown's avatar

If the numbers are not a true reflection of the number of visitors (which is what I think is happening) then it is wrong.

And yes I have a domain mapped blog. Interesting.

Why do my referrals not reflect the inflated numbers. I still do not feel the numbers are properly reflecting the true traffic to my blog.

Still.. if they are… wouldn’t that be wonderful! :-)

  • Unknown's avatar

I don’t understand why a second thread has been started and why bloggers are posting into both threads https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/stats-amp-snow?replies=12

  • Unknown's avatar

I know for a fact that the stats were UNDER-reporting before, and that Google has started showing up again in my stats when they were absent for some. That is why I suspect they are now reporting more accurately. It’s not just me being optimistic.
