Split: Got billed for premium but account has free profile

HI,
I have had a email address with WordPress for a while and never used it. Its because of the information that you require on my Debit Card that I am rather undecided about.
By this I mean if I enter my card details when I register for a domain am I going to be charged for it as it says the first year is free.
Will my Card be charged as its not really clear on what will happen when I get to the checkout. Also the Honey site said I had a discount on top of the usual yearly fee?. Seems odd that that can happen when I am not supposed to be paying for the first year.
Could you please clarify if indeed by the time I get to the checkout after entering Card details etc that I am not going to be charged anything for the first year. -

The domain is free for the first year only if you purchase one of our plans. If you purchase a domain without a plan you’ll be charged for it.
Also the Honey site said I had a discount on top of the usual yearly fee?
What Honey site are you referring to? If you have received a discount code you can use that during the checkout.

I am so sorry but I am not really understanding the meaning of this ‘free’ for the first year when in actual fact its not because I have to purchase a plan.
Its not making much sense to me.
I do not mean to be disrespectful but I really dont understand why it is I have to puurchase a plan when it says the domain is free for the first year.
Is there a difference between the ‘free domain’ and one of the plans.
Does it mean I get the domain name free but have to purchase a plan.
This does not make sense to me.
Apologies if I seem rather ignorant but honestly I dont understand. Free is free and after that I read the meaning as just that and after a year one would then pay for the plan or choosing a plan for their domain.
Hope you can clarify for me please.

It’s in fact very simple.
You have the Free Plan with limited features and you get an URL domainname.wordpress.com.
When you buy a paid plan for 1 year, you get a custom domain e.g. domainname.com or domainname.org, for free for the first year.
If you mean with the Honey site, https://www.joinhoney.com/, those so called coupons are for wordpress.org hosting. -
When you upgrade your free site to any WordPress.com annual plan, registering a new custom domain name, like mysite.com, is included in your plan at no additional charge. From the second year onward, you pay for the domain renewal and the upgrade plan separately.
In order to use a custom domain on a WordPress.com website, you need to have an upgrade plan. https://wordpress.com/support/domains/register-domain/
