Split Words in Posts (Twenty Fourteen theme)

  • Unknown's avatar

    I recently activated the Twenty Fourteen theme to my own blog, and though it looks great, I do have a minor issue involving the width of my posts. I’ve noticed that the majority of my entries feature frequently split words at the end of almost each line. Is there any way I can keep the words together and not broken on separate lines? Any feedback on this matter would be appreciated. Thank you!

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    I checked this post as an example, but I didn’t see very many split words:

    It’s quite possible I looked right past them. Is there a better link?

    The Twenty Fourteen theme does use the “hyphens” and “word-wrap” properties. You can turn those off for post and page content areas using the following custom CSS. Custom CSS can be applied to a WordPress.com blog if you have purchased the Custom Design upgrade.

    .entry-content,
    .entry-summary,
    .page-content {
    	-webkit-hyphens: none;
    	-moz-hyphens: none;
    	-ms-hyphens: none;
    	hyphens: none;
    	word-wrap: normal;
    }

    I am getting the same with the 2014 theme. It’s working really well but there are random examples where words are hyphenated either in the text or in some cases in the title of a widget. It looks really amateur.

    Is there any way this can e removed without paying for the custom design upgrade?

    The blog I need help with is parbrook.wordpress.com.

    I’m surprised this is a default. I can’t imagine very many people really want auto-hyphenation. It diminishes the overall experience for the end user by degrading readability of the text.

    Rather than paying for the custom design upgrade, or messing with child themes, I recommend finding a theme that doesn’t have this behavior (I like Suffusion myself but have tried many others and never seen this behavior before).

    At the very least, this should be user-configurable with a simple toggle in the theme.

    It appears that I’m not the only one who is not a fan of the automatic hyphenations. Not only that but I found the narrowing of posts in a vast area of white space cumbersome.

    Shortly after publishing my original post, I switched to the Suits theme which eliminated the majority of the issues I had with Twenty-Fourteen.

    There isn’t because the themes are all unique and things like hyphens are a design decision made by the theme author. The Custom Design upgrade is made specifically for people who don’t like some parts of the theme design (like the hyphenation in this case) and want to have extra control to change them. Without that upgrade, the base account is free with no monthly hosting fees, and the yearly paid upgrades are how WordPress.com makes money without charging monthly hosting fees.

    @mscoolsville, Suits is a great choice! I hope you love using it! :)
