splitting a page in to two equal columns

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like to know if I can split one page into two equal columns please? On our practitioners page, I would like our information and photos to appear side by side so that one of us doesn’t have their information half way down the page. Is this possible?

    many thanks
    Claire

    Hi Claire,

You may be able to create the two columns you want by inserting an HTML table into your page: http://en.support.wordpress.com/advanced-html/#tables

You could then create a two-column table, with your information and photos each in one of the columns.

If HTML is new to you, you may want to start by learning some fundamentals about HTML first: Beginning HTML

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

Brilliant, thanks so much. I am new to it all, so will definitely read the beginning bit you suggest first. Many thanks

Hi Rachel, thanks for your help so far.

We have two more queries please?

1- I’m not able to add my Facebook page on the website.

2- how to get a widget for google ranking please?

    Many thanks,

    Elaine and Claire

    Hi Elaine and Claire,

1- I’m not able to add my Facebook page on the website.

I see you added a link to your Facebook page in the footer of your website. If you’d like more than that, one option is to add the Facebook Like Box widget to one of your widget areas (a sidebar or footer).

Please let me know if you have questions about setting that up.

2- how to get a widget for google ranking please?

Can you give me more details about what kind of widget that would be? If you’ve seen a widget like that on another website, you can send me a link to it — that way I can take a look and see if that’s an option here at WordPress.com. :)

    2- hi Rachel,

The widget/plug in is called YOAST.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Elaine and Claire,

WordPress.com does not support the Yoast plugin/widget, but we do quite a lot of search engine work behind the scenes. You can see how WordPress.com works with search engines and SEO here: Search Engines

Hi Rachel, thanks for your help. Are you Rachel Squirrel?

Things here are a bit dark at the moment as we are a bit lost….:) could you help us please?

1- we have a page called blog on our website. We would like the content of our ‘Facebook business page’ found on http://www.facebook.com/osteopathyatlondon to come automatically to our blog page. We have managed to make it appear using the Facebook like plugin but it only shows as a small box on the page and we would like it to take up the whole page please?

2- apparently we have an email address (email visible only to moderators and staff) however we don’t know how to access it. Someone else has set this up for us and we don’t know how to access it as this person is not helping us anymore.

3- Do we have to write the SEO? I was reading about and apparently I don’t. However I’m not sure and would be good to have some clarification about it please ?

4- how do we put a photo of Claire and The page “Practitioners”. We need one photo of each….

5- on the page “articles” there is a box called “META”. How can we get rid of it please?

6- we need a small box (text box) to put our testimonials on the front page. It seems we can’t add anything on the front page.

    Many thanks,

    Elaine and Claire

    Hi Elaine and Claire,

I’m not Rachel Squirrel — she’s another Happiness Engineer here. :)

1- we have a page called blog on our website. We would like the content of our ‘Facebook business page’ found on http://www.facebook.com/osteopathyatlondon to come automatically to our blog page.

There isn’t a way to do this automatically here at WordPress.com. All of the ways you can integrate Facebook with your blog are listed here: Facebook Integration

However, you can have your blog posts automatically published on Facebook (a reverse of what you mentioned) with our Publicize feature. That way, you can post content and share links on your blog here and have them appear on Facebook.

2- apparently we have an email address (email visible only to moderators and staff) however we don’t know how to access it. Someone else has set this up for us and we don’t know how to access it as this person is not helping us anymore.

Domains that are linked to WordPress.com have a couple options for email. One option is to use our email forwarding feature: Email Forwarding

The other option is to set up email service with another email provider: Add Email

It doesn’t look like you have email service set up with your domain in a way that the email address you mentioned would work. However, you can take a look at those two options I mentioned to set it up again. Once you’ve picked an option, I’d be happy to help you get it set up and working here.

3- Do we have to write the SEO? I was reading about and apparently I don’t. However I’m not sure and would be good to have some clarification about it please ?

WordPress.com takes care of basic SEO for you — there’s nothing specific you have to do for that. If you’d like to improve how your website ranks in search engines, we have some tips for things you can do here:

    SEO and Your Blog

4- how do we put a photo of Claire and The page “Practitioners”. We need one photo of each….

You can add photos to your page with this guide: Adding Images to Posts or Pages

5- on the page “articles” there is a box called “META”. How can we get rid of it please?

That is the Meta Widget, and it will appear automatically on any page where you don’t have other widgets enabled. To remove it, you can add a blank Text Widget to your First Sidebar area under Appearance > Widgets here:

    https://gaiaosteopathy.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php

We have more about that in the Troubleshooting section here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/#troubleshooting

6- we need a small box (text box) to put our testimonials on the front page. It seems we can’t add anything on the front page.

Your front page is the page you have titled “Home.” You can add content by editing that page and adding content in the editor there.

Please let me know if you have any other questions about that. :)

    1- Hi Rachel, thanks.

We already worked out how to get posts from our website to facebook however we would like our posts to all sit on a our website page called ‘BLOG’. Is this possible please?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, you can have all of your blog posts appear on your “BLOG” page. That’s controlled under Settings > Reading in your site’s dashboard here:

    https://gaiaosteopathy.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php

In the “Front page displays” setting, next to “Posts page:” you can choose the “BLOG” page from the drop-down menu. Then, click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the page. That will make all of your blog posts appear on that “BLOG” page on your site.

Please let me know if I can do anything more to help with that.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Great! I have done that!
Any chance that I could have the pictures please? The posts seems to come only with text.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m not sure I understand. I see pictures in the blog posts on your blog page here: http://gaiaosteopathy.co.uk/blog/

For example, the latest post includes a picture: http://gaiaosteopathy.co.uk/2014/09/01/turmeric-for-reducing-inflammation-in-your-body/

Are you having trouble viewing those pictures on your end?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Rachel,

Yes i saw it now. Many thanks :)

    Hi Rachel,

I just wonder if you could help us to set up the email address please?

We decided to go for the first option (“email forwarding”).

It’s telling us to go to “my domains” and then “edit” however the edit button is not taking us anywhere (not working).

We would like our email address to be (email visible only to moderators and staff)

As per instructions we opened an yahoo account ((email visible only to moderators and staff)) that we would like our email forwarded to. Is it an free option, isn’t it? Please can you tell us how to make it happen?

    Many thanks,

    Claire and Elaine

I’ve set up an email forward for (email visible only to moderators and staff), forwarding to (email visible only to moderators and staff). You will receive a confirmation email at (email visible only to moderators and staff), and once you’ve confirmed the forward it will be active.

If you need to add more forwards, you can go to this page in your dashboard: https://gaiaosteopathy.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains. You can click on the Edit Domain button, then add your to and from email addresses on the next page.

Is it an free option, isn’t it?

Yes, email forwarding is free. You can forward up to five email addresses.

Let me know if this helps, or if you need anything else. :)

    Thanks,

Sam, you are a star!!! Thank you.

While we are on a role…would you mind helping us with out practitioner page please, we can’t seem to get the info in the columns level?

    Many thanks again

    Hi Claire!

Glad that worked for ya. :)

I’ve restyled the columns on your Practitioners page with CSS. I know Rachel recommended tables, and they are simpler to use than CSS. They sometimes don’t work for layout, and when they don’t, it’s time to switch to CSS.

You can view the code in the text view of the page editor of this page to see the changes I’ve made. You can also refer to this doc for more info about styling with CSS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/advanced-html/#columns.

You may also want to consider the Custom Design upgrade. This would allow you to make widespread changes to your site with CSS. You can learn more about it here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/.

Let me know if this works for you, or if you need anything else. :)

    Thanks,
