Splitting content and the ‘read more’ tag
-
When I place the ‘read more’ tag between the opening paragraph and the rest of the post I see that the bulk of the entry is contained within a faint blue box..with the word ‘more’ in the upper right corner. I Save the post, then Preview it..but all of the script is still there. Do you have to hit the Publish button before the post hides the box? In other words is there any way to preview what the page (with content split and hidden) will look like to a reader?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You are doing it correct. If you are referring to the little box with ‘More’ in it as seen in the 2nd figure here http://support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/ then everything is correct. The box does not go away; it is meant to indicate that you are using the More tag here.
Mind you, the More tag only works on multiple post pages, e.g. your front page. On the post page itself the full post will show no matter what. So previewing the post with the tag will have no effect whatsoever. You need to view a multi-post page, e.g. the home page or a category/tag or archive page to see the More tag in action.

Okay. Thanks. I guess there is no way to preview how this will look on a multiple post page. Are you saying you’d have to hit the Publish button first? Also the material after the More has all been downloaded via Microsoft Word (using the inset on the toolbar) but I see some dire warnings about what can happen, in some cases, transfering Word script. Any experience with that?
again, thanks -
1. The only way to “preview” that, i.e. see the result on your main page without your visitors seeing it, is by initially publishing the post as private.
2. If you paste the material via the “Paste from Word” or the “Paste as Plain Text” buttons, nothing wrong will happen.
