Sponsorship question

My question might be sort of odd. I’m wondering how exactly this works(or doesn’t work) in regards to the Advertising agreement in the ToS for WordPress.

Now I haven’t done any of this, nor do I even know where to start, so it’s purely hypothetical at this point in time.

But basically, say I contact a company and they agree to give me <something> that I can then give back to my readers in a contest, or what have you(maybe I get a lot of <somethings> and I can give them away to the first 100 people who send me an email, as another idea here).

Is that against the ToS in regards to Advertisement, if I mention the company who gave me the <something>. If it’s not against the ToS, how far can you go with that? Is it alright to mention them, and link to them? Mention, link, and put up a little image with their logo?

As an example, say I get a signed book from my favorite author under the stipulation that I’m going to give it away in a contest. I make up some contest rules for someone to win this book(man, this is a cool book!). I’ve read the book, I like the book, I think it’s a neat book. Is it alright to say that, basically? “I’m going to have a contest for this really awesome, signed book by one of my favorite authors. She’s written a lot of this and this, which are also great. You can check out her Facebook page here or go to her website here if you want to see more.”

  • That should be fine, as long as you are not simply advertising for the company in exchange for money.
