SPUN theme: front page link to url

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’m using the SPUN theme as a website not blog and wanting to link one of them to another WP site I’m using as my blog. Is this possible? The one I’d like to link is the green “my blog” circle.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,
    All of those circles represent posts. The “my blog” circle is the post https://smmentyka.wordpress.com/2015/08/13/my-blog/. So, essentially, what you are asking for is a redirect from a post to an external URL. I’m sure it would be possible on a self-hosted WordPress.org site, but I’m unaware of a means to accomplish this on a WordPress.com site.

    Hi @hapicat, @musicdoc1 is correct. There is no way to change the URL on one of the images on the Posts page of Spun at WordPress.com.

    Thank you both. I think I’ve just designed myself into a corner then. I just assumed I’d be able to do it if it was linking to another WordPress blog. I’ll have to think about what to do then. Thank you for your help.

    @ hapicat,

    You’re welcome. It’s very easy to link an image embedded in a post or page, or an image in a text widget or image widget, to any valid URL. However, that is not true of a case such as this where the image is, by the theme’s design, linked internally to a specific type of content (page, post, project).

    I should have said,

    “…where the image is, by the theme’s design, linked internally to a specific URL — in this case each image being linked to one specific post.”

    @musicdoc1 so it sounds like I could successfully use one of the widget areas to either re-direct to another URL or perhaps display the most recent post. I’ll try that. Thank you.

    Would you know if I’d be able to have one of the menu links at the top right link to and external url as well?

    @musicdoc1,
    I thing I figured out how to add a custom link to the menu and I took a stab at adding a widget (middle one) that displays posts from another WordPress blog, so this might work.

    Would you know if I’d be able to remove my name from the title? I added “Recent Posts” as the title in the widget, but I think it’s pulling my name directly from the blog link url.

    Hi,

    I added “Recent Posts” as the title in the widget, but I think it’s pulling my name directly from the blog link url.

    I would guess that the title “from the blog: Sharon Mentyka” appears because no title was assigned to the widget. It should display any title you enter and save instead of this.

    Yeah, it didn’t seem to overwrite it. I assigned the title “From the blog” but it’s showing my name pulled from the blog I think. I’ll see if I can investigate further.

    I figured it out by removing the site name in my blog. Thanks!

    The title of the widget now reads “On Sharon’s Blog:: Sharon Mentyka, children’s writer.” Maybe on this theme the site title is automatically added to whatever title you assign to that widget. I don’t know how else to explain it. Have never see this effect before.

    It’s not even the site title of the correct blog.

  • Unknown's avatar

    It pulls the name from whatever’s entered on the “Title” Settings of the blog it’s displaying. I’m fiddling with both of them to make it work. Something new every day!

    You may add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this topic to call for staff attention.

    I mistook this to mean that you were using a Recent Posts widget. Obviously you are not, because that would only display posts from the present website, not from an external one. Which widget are you using to link to posts on the other site (https://sharonmentyka.wordpress.com/)?

  • Unknown's avatar

    It’s the “Display WordPress Posts” widget.

    I like the way I’ve got it working now…it forced me to create a better visual header for the blog, but it would be good to figure it out for anyone else who tries to use it.

  • Display Posts does indeed add the blog title, even if you don’t specify a widget title. And if you do add a widget title it’s still difficult to get just the blog title out. You can hide both, though, if you have Premium. Just use this CSS:

    .widget_jetpack_display_posts_widget h6 { display: none; }
