Spurious breaks inserted into paragraphs

  • Unknown's avatar

    When I either type in html or cut and paste it from my system, extra markup gets inserted. Specifically, if I type or paste in:
    <p>
    Here is some text.
    Here is some more text.
    </p>

    The normal output in a browser would join the two lines. However, when I view the source on my wordpress page, <br/> has been inserted at the end of the first line: “Here is some text.” This, of course, causes these two sentences to appear on two lines instead of one.

    I haven’t seen any discussion of this behavior in the forums; has anyone else seen it and is there a way to change it? BTW, I’ve tried this with both editor settings, using the code tab with the “Visual Rich Editor” option.

    Thanks,

    Yup, that’s TinyMCE for you. Thinks it’s better than the person doing the writing. :)

    Been discussed many times in the past. Do a search for tinymce and you’ll see the threads. You may have to follow the Google link at the bottom though.

    You have better control over your text with the standard editor. Dashboard -> Users -> Your Profile -> Uncheck the box at the top of the page and save it to give it a try.

    drmike,

    Thanks for the suggestion. I gave the standard editor another try (I had tried it before, but it never hurts to try again:), but got the same result.

    I suspect both editors are trying to optimize things for people who are used to typing into editors that wrap for them, and who therefore mean a paragraph break when they hit return. For an old timer like me, who’s used to text editors that don’t do anything you don’t explicitly tell them to do, it’s disconcerting.

    I think I’ll just hack up a perl script to make the contents of each paragraph a single line. That’s the equivalent of what I’ve had to do by hand for previous posts. I’ll also take a trip through the TinyMCE forum postings to see if I can find any other strategies.

    Thanks for your help,
    Dick

    It very may well be. I’d go ahead and drop a feedback from your dashboard and ask them to route it to Andy. (It’s Andy watching over the editors, right?) Of course, please try to be as specific as possible.

    I just stick with the normal text editor. I’ve had too many poor experiences with TinyMCE.
