Spurious smiley inserted in a posting

  I just posted an article including a reference which ended … 2008)

  WordPress turned the 8) into a smiley. To prevent this happening, I had to put a space between the 8 and the ). There weren’t any unexpected tags in the HTML view, or anything like that.

  How do I stop stupid things like this happening?

  Just space it… ya know, 2008 ) instead of 2008)

  Certain character combinations are turned into smilies: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/06/04/what-smilies-can-i-use/ .

  You can turn off smilies under settings > writing.
