SSL and Domain Redirect
-
I have four domains that are not new, and have been pending SSL seemingly for awhile. They are all redirects. Is there an issue with SSL and redirect? I did not have this issue with Google Domains, but know it is an issue with GoDaddy.
If it is not an issue and the domain simply needs to be re-provisioned, why can we not attempt a reset ourselves? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there!
Free SSL certificates on WordPress.com are provided when the domains are hosted on WordPress.com sites. It seems you have many domains that are pointed elsewhere. We can activate SSL if you host the domain on your WordPress.com site. For domains hosted elsewhere, you’ll need to contact the hosting company for help with activating SSL.
Could you specify the four domains you are referring to? I can check if they are hosted on WordPress.com and see if there’s something preventing the SSL provisioning.
Thanks!

With a redirect the A record is at WordPress.com, and should not be on the host, as that final domain is secure. It’s the connection from one domain to the other that triggers the SSL alert, because the domain registered with WordPress.com is not secure.
advertiseevansville.com, advertisecentralwisconsin.com, advertisepeoria.com, advertisekalamazoo.com, alexmwcradio.com, knoxadvertising.com, mwcjimtiedt.com, mwcginaclower.com are at least some.
These all had SSL active when we first transferred them from Google Domains, but at some point went to pending, and if it is an issue upon renewal, we may have it on more in the future. -
Hey there,
Thank you for sharing the specific domains. We tried provisioning SSL certificates for the domains you provided but received an
authorization failureerror. It looks like your domains have AAAA records in addition to the domain redirections which is likely causing this issue. Please remove the AAAA records from the domains, and we will try provisioning SSL certificates again. Thanks!

The AAAA records appeared to somehow be linked to the default WordPress.com A record, when I deleted one of the AAAA records, the A record would delete with it, but I deleted all of the AAAA records, and renewed the default A record. This was more common in my domains than I realized, so if you have to manually provision the SSL after these changes, I might have additional domains. Perhaps this was an error that occurred in the transfer between Google Domains and WordPress.com? I certainly didn’t manually add those AAAA records.

After taking a closer look I would agree, it seems that these were records that were set originally when Google was the registrar of these domains. When they are transferred to WordPress.com, we retain all the original records in an abundance of caution, so they would need to be removed in this case since the conflict with our ability to provision SSL.
I can see you have made changes to some of the domains you mentioned, and we were able to provision SSL for the following:
Are there any others for which you have removed AAAA records manually, and would like us to check SSL on?

Apologies for that, that is not the expected behavior. Do you have any domains for which you need to remove AAAA records but have not done so yet? If yes please let us know one that we can check on to see what happens when we try to remove the records. We’d like to take a closer look at that, thanks!

Sorry, it took me a bit to see you had responded. I believe I had already removed the AAAA records on the domains, and the ones you had not already provisioned, appear to have done so automatically. Thank you for your help with this.
