ssl without cpanel

  • Unknown's avatar

I have been trying to secure my new website.
It’s only a try out, and a personal, not commercial website. So I don’t want tp spend lots of money. But I am getting really confused.
All of the videos showing how to get a certificate, assume I have Cpanel, and not tell you what to do if I haven’t got it.
I believe I have some how generated an SSL but then it says go to cpanel to install it, and this is where I falter, because I don’t have it.
    Can someone help please.

Is there anyone else on this forum?

  • Hi there,

WordPress.com does not offer cPanel access. Is there something specific that you are wanting to do with cPanel?

Also, we automatically install SSL certificates from Let’s Encrypt on all WordPress.com sites, so there is no worries of installing it yourself.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks!

Ok I am very new to the web stuff, so I get confused by hosting and domains ect.
This is surprising as I am a data network engineer, but have not tried web building before.
So what I am trying to do is build my own personal website, for no gain, or business, just personal blog sort of stuff. However, I have been told rain and fire will fall on me if I do not make my website secure. I have been trying to fulfil this by following several youtube posts, and after tring several one’s, all fall at the point where they all seem to use some file editor cpanel. But when I go from the WordPress dashboard, this is no where to be found. So I tried getting a certificate from zerossl, and created one, but again cannot install it because of the lack of a file editor. And this is where I am at.
You are saying the security is put on automatically after 72 hours, well mine is still showing unsecure after a full week.
I have tried following the link in your reply and still don’t know what to do.

  • You are right, SSL is important, which is why we provide is at no cost here on WordPress.com hosting.

Where things might be getting confused is the name “WordPress”. There are several ways you can get a WordPress site on the Internet. It sounds like you have found one of the ways, but that what you have created so far is not hosted here with us at WordPress.com.

What I recommend next is set aside what you have learned so far. Instead, devote 20 minutes toward using the WordPress.com account you have created to make a new site on our hosting.

To do that, follow the instructions here: https://wordpress.com/support/create-a-blog/

Within hours of creating a new free site on our hosting at WordPress.com, your site URL will have a SSL. And, because you are on our hosting, you can continue to come back to these forums and get help from us. :)

Give those instructions a try and let us know if you get stuck anywhere.

Hi thanks for your help, it is really appreciated.
I will try your suggestions, but want to ask, I have spent some time with the site I have already started. Will I be able to move the contents, or copy what I have in place, into the newly created website?
    regards
    Chris

  • Hi Chris, it depends on the kids of changes you’ve made.

If you’ve added themes or plugins or modified the code, you’d need the Business Plan to keep everything as it is. Given what you’ve said about this being a personal plan that might not be your best choice.

To be clear, we manage the installations here on our servers, including taking care of security and providing support for paid plans. So outside code through plugins/themes/scripts/etc. introduces extra complexity and therefore costs more.

If you want to just export your content (posts, pages, etc) and import that here, that’s totally doable. This may help:
    https://transferto.wordpress.com/self-hosted-wordpress-org/

Just note if you’ve been developing locally and we’re trying to import images and what not, our server will need to be able to reach your images. You could also just add your images via https://wordpress.com/media and then update any references in your content.

Hi I have created another site through the links you have included, and this seemed to work ok, but I tried to export the content from the site I spent some time creating, into the new site.
I created an export XML file as instructed, and dragged that into import when on the new site. The import was reported as successful, but my new site is just the same, and shows nothing from the import.

  • Unknown's avatar

ok it seems that some of my content has been imported, but in raw form, like reading unformatted text.
The site home page included an image and page formatting with colours and headings, but the editing options don’t appear to be available.
I cannot see how to edit a page where I can insert pictures or columns. I used an editor called Elementor, from the WordPress pages before, why isn’t this available now I have created IN WordPress?

  • What is the URL of the site you imported to, and the URL of the site you imported from?

  • Unknown's avatar

OK it seems I am getting the hang of this a little.
I think it’s just practise. I keep getting encouraged to launch the site. Can I ask, once it is launched, can I still edit it, and is this where the security kicks in?

  • Hi there,

Yes, you will always be able to edit your site, even after it is launched.

And security kicked in as soon as you created your account, so it is definitely in place whenever you are ready to launch your site.

For more information about security, please visit:

    Thanks!

ok moving along. I have now launched the site ok.
I want to link some items and getting conflicting information.

getting very confused by the 2 link symbols…shame I can’t post a snapshot of what I mean.

  • You can upload the snapshot in your media library and we can view it from there.

    Thanks!

    OK 3 issues

    1. a little worrying, from the wp admin page, it states that I have a shopping cart awaiting payment where at no time have I asked for anything which is not covered by the free plan. I want this gone.

    2. I have added a snapshot of the links to my media library as you suggested. Perhaps someone can explain why I don’t get the same options as the youtube helper.

    3. I think I have made a mistake, as I had a page with a lot of content, but then had a go at editing a post, and now this post has taken place of my other page.
When viewing from the web, I see the edited post, in place of what was there before, but in the admin pages, my original content is still there.
How can I get this back please.

    thanks in advance

    1. You can click on “edit” and then the trash can to remove a purchase from your Shopping cart.
    2. Check the Youtube video actually applies to WordPress.com and also applies to the same editor (Block or wp-admin) you are working with.
    3. Are you talking about a Post or a Page? You can set the appropriate front page that appears on your site at Design/Customize/Homepage settings.

  • Unknown's avatar

    ok
1, I seem to have trashed the charge in the basket, thanks, I’ll see if this comes back

2, I am not sure what you mean. In the search for videos, I always put in WordPress, and it looks similar. This is the link I was using.

3, I had a page I called ‘coming soon’, but this was labelled ‘Blogs’ on the home page.
I started writing a lot of stuff on this page, but then, unrelated (I thought) to this page, I had a go at writing a post. And in doing so, the post seems to have defaulted to a new page called Blog.
And now when I cick the ‘Blogs’ link from the homepage, I don’t see the original ‘coming soon’ page, but only the post I have just written.
My original content is still there when I view the editing page option, but not from the website.
From a complete novice, it appears to favour the post, instead of my other original stuff, and I don’t know how to get it back.

  • Unknown's avatar

    1. It shouldn’t come back unless you click on an upgraded plan again.
2.The YouTube video is describing WordPress.org and the wp-admin dashboard. Often there can be differences in how .com and .org works. Best to use the correct videos at https://wordpress.com/support/video-tutorials/ In the case of links things are quite similar if you add a link using a Classic Block.
    3. A link to your site would be useful to see how you have set things up and perhaps you should check out the differences between pages and posts and how to set up a menu.
    https://wordpress.com/support/post-vs-page/
    https://wordpress.com/support/menus/

  • Unknown's avatar

So the basket charge hasn’t come back.

Still not really got my head around the differences in org + com, but muddling through.

I have kind of sorted out my page issue by somehow adding a page, and copying my existing content into it.

My next problem is probably something to do which the overall template design I chose from the outset. But there is an annoying gap at the top of every page, when the website is viewed. On editing this gap is not there, so I suspect it has something to do with the menu’s or header or something. I can’t seem to find out how to lose this, and move the opening content up to the top of each page.

    Any ideas please.
    Chris

  • Hi Chris,

Do you mean the space at the top of the page, just above your site’s title? If you have a look at the right, you’ll notice that it’s the menu that’s taking all that space so, the longer your menu, the more space it will take.

If you don’t like it, have a look at other themes with horizontal menus. You can try the older themes without activating them by clicking on the three dots next to the theme’s name and choosing the option Try&Customize.

This will allow you to see how the theme would look like with your content and how could you customize it.

    I hope that helps :)
