Ssttings/Permalink on my website
-
I’m currently taking your online training and I tried finding the Permalink portion in order to see how my URLs for my posts are displayed but when I looked under Settings-General I do not see the Permalink option. Please help.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Could you confirm if the training you’re taking is for WordPress.com or WordPress.org? As far as I remember, permalink settings are available only for self-hosted sites (WordPress.org)

Could you give us a link to the training page you’re on? I’m quite sure it’s related to WordPress.org, because I just did a quick search and people have asked multiple times about the permalink structures on WordPress.com and the staff’s answer has always been the same: that feature is available only on self-hosted WordPress sites.
You can change the slug of your post/page (more info here) but you won’t be able to change the structure of the permalink entirely.

It was the first hour of the webinar that was aired today. Would I be correct that if there was not an item named Permalink under settings that I would not have access to that? And if I don’t, what does the URL for each of my blogposts look like? I can’t find those URLs.

I’m afraid I don’t know which webinar you’re referring to, but it seems very much like a webinar meant for self-hosted WordPress sites.
Anyway, you’re right: since all WordPress.com blogs (including https://jakehatmacher.wordpress.com/) do not have access to the “Permalinks” settings, so the URL structures cannot be changed.
By default, all posts are in the format of https://jakehatmacher.wordpress.com/yyyy/mm/dd/slug and all pages are in the format of https://jakehatmacher.wordpress.com/slug
You can customize the “slug” of the page/post any time you want. If you do not specify a slug, the title of the page/post will be used to generate the slug automatically when you publish the page/post.
For instance, the latest post on your site is titled “And More…” so the URL of that post is “https://jakehatmacher.wordpress.com/2016/07/01/and-more/”

Thanks. That’s good to know. Do you know why I would have received an invitation for this webinar if I didn’t have a WordPress.org account? I’m supposed to listen to 3 more hours today of that webinar but wonder if it’s going to do me any good.

It’s a shame that WordPress imposes this URL structure on hosted sites. It makes articles look dated and hurts SEO. If this is a nag to sell an upgrade, then just tell us, else it’s really poor form on the part of WordPress devs.

@jklodoc: Could you tell us who sent you the invitation for the webinar? That would help us understand if this is an official link (unlikely) or if some third-party individual has sent you a link for an unofficial webinar.
Either way, from what you’ve said so far, it’s apparent that this webinar is targeted towards people who have self-hosted WordPress sites. So you would be spending three hours learning about something that you can’t implement as-is on WordPress.com. If you’re interested in learning about WordPress.com, you can start here.
@aishaakbar71: I tried to find an explanation for this restriction. The closest answer I found was on this forum thread. I’ve also pasted the answer here:
You cannot change permalinks at wordpress.COM. This is a multi-user version of wordpress and there are limits to what can and cannot be changed since we all share the same underlying files. A change to any of those files would change things for everyone, not just the person making the change.

Uh-oh…did you sign up for their membership? I just checked their site and their training course seems quite pricey, but more importantly, it’s a course for self-hosted sites!
If you haven’t already done so, please read this page that lists all the differences between WordPress.com sites and self-hosted sites: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Then based on your needs, you can choose to continue running your site here or host your site elsewhere, to fully utilize all the features mentioned in that training course.
Speaking of the course, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I’m sure that only a small part of what they teach in it will apply to any site hosted on WordPress.com.
