Staff attn: new upgrade required for domain removal embedded link clean-up
-
I have recently removed domain mapping form two blogs knowing this would result in 404 page not found when people click my related post links both embedded intyo my posts and displayed as related posts at the bottom of my posts.
As my blog contains much relevant and useful information for WordPress.COM bloggers, I would cheerfully pay up to $50 for a site redirect that resulted in a clean-up of these links but the site redirect upgrade does not do that. I know there are plugins that can be used by Staff to do this and I am on my knees begging here.
I am suggesting that wordpress.COM Staff consider providing such an upgrade because I am sure there are other bloggers who would also be pleased to pay for such an embedded links clean-up and redirect.
P.S. Maybe this should be moved to the Ideas Forum. I did not want to post it there and note that it never that it never saw the light of day. Please respond.

you need one of the suggested upgrades that I have never quite got around to posting here -“reverse domain mapping” – that redirects traffic from the custom domain to the base blog – then a tool that changes the links to the base blog
standard problem for others – make them a paid upgrade – $13. for Reverse domain mapping and maybe $20 or so for the use of the link changer tool – one time fee
Sorry @TT I did not put this in the ring 6 months ago when I though of it
good luck

Actually we can only redirect domains that are mapped here. If a domain points elsewhere, someone would have to create redirects at their new host.
But if the domain is mapped here, this “reverse redirect” thing is as simple as selecting thebasesite.wordpress.com as the primary address. So if you’re ever planning to phase out a domain name, I recommend keeping the mapping for a bit, but making the .wordpress.com address primary.
Anyway, I’ve emailed you @timetheif — no worries, we’ll help you sort this out :)

I have been manually changing links embedded into the text of my posts from http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com to http://onecoolsite.wordpress.com in some posts. As the content dates back to 2077 and there are 1,039 published posts you can imagine what a formidable undertaking this is.
I hasten to add I already knew that there was no upgrade that would address my issues re:
(1) links embedded in posts to my earlier posts;
(2) related post links I manually added to the bottom of my posts for years before WordPress.COM introduced Related posts;
(3) links to earlier posts I embedded in my comment responses,
or I can guarantee that I would have bought it immediately.As I referred to above many years previous to WordPress.com introducing Related posts here I manually added links to the bottom of may posts under “Related posts found in this blog” and In can use omnisearch to locate them using that search string.
Here’s the first kicker – I can only find some and not all of them. Here’s the second kicker – there’s no bulk edit.
As for links to earlier posts in my comments there’s no elegant means of even locating them. :(
Above I said I’d pay $50. for this potential new upgrade that would chnage every link no matter where it is located in the blog from a http://onecoolsite.bloggingtips.com link to a http://onecoolsite.wordpress.com link. Today I’m ready to double that amount to $100.
@supernovia
The domain mapping upgrades have been removed from both blogs for days now. All links aside from those internal links I mentioned in (1), (2), (3) are redirecting properly. However, I doubt what you suggest would be useful in the case of internal link replacement in (1) (2) and (3) above.What’s needed is the ability to do a macro find and replace to change the link preface throughout the entire blog. Maybe this would do it https://wordpress.org/plugins/velvet-blues-update-urls/ or maybe not. However, I do know a coder could conquer this and I’m reluctant to give up hope.
Thanks so much for emailing me. As soon as a get a break from work today I’ll read your email.

Oops! I see a date error above. I meant to type:

@supernovia
I am so sorry about the ridiculous grammar mess above. It makes me look illiterate. I was holding a crying baby on my lap and was distracted by the shrieking. Hubby has now taken my place at work and I have responded to your email. -
