Staging site
-
Hi – We want to redesign an existing wordpress.com site that’s on a business plan. I’ve found forum recommendations that suggest designing the new site on a separate free wordpress.com location and then when it’s ready, that can be copied to replace the live site on the real domain. But I don’t want to copy-paste all the content from the current live site over to a temporary new site in order to begin working on the design. Is there a way to have a staging site that starts off as a copy of the current live site?

Hi there!
If you’d like to work on the entire design of the site without anyone seeing the changes happen, and you do not want to create a new site to do that, one solution is to temporarily add a Coming Soon page. We typically recommend Coming Soon Page, Under Construction, & Maintenance Mode by SeedProd: https://wordpress.org/plugins/coming-soon/
If you’re interested in trying out a new theme without activating it live, on a Business Plan you can try installing a plugin called Theme Switcha: https://wordpress.com/plugins/theme-switcha. It allows you to try out a theme without affecting your live site, as well as provide links to show people how it would look or even allow visitors to change themes from the front-end. However, once you are ready to activate the theme, any theme setup and customizations must be done again and won’t carry over from testing.
Also, remember that you can reach us via live chat from the account where you have the Business plan.
