Stand alone photo vs. Gallery
-
I find that when I want to add a stand-alone photo after inserting a gallery, that the stand-alone is dumped into the gallery.
This happens every time. It’s most frustrating. So far, the only option I’ve found to fix it is to open the gallery for edit and move the offending photo to the trash. Fortunately it’s still where I added it as a stand-alone.Is there a way to upload a photo and have it NOT go into a gallery that has just been created?
Thanks.

Please search the forum before asking questions: most questions have been answered repeatedly.
Since an image uploaded to a post will automatically become part of its gallery, what you’re looking for can be done by not uploading the gallery and the stand-alone image to the same post.
Solution a: upload and insert the gallery in the new post; upload and insert the s-a image in an older post, cut its code from the html editor of that post, paste it in the html editor of the new post.
Solution b: upload and insert the s-a image in the new post; upload and insert the gallery in an older post, get the ID number of that post, write this in the new post:
[gallery id="NUMBER_HERE"]For the best info on galleries, see this post by fellow forum volunteer justjennifer:

Thank you.
Your solution seems even more complicated than the one I figured out on my own. So I guess there’s not really a simple solution. I’ll just keep doing it as I have. There must be a way for the people who write code to give us an option to include it in a gallery or not when we upload.
Having been a moderator on a forum with thousands of members, I know the worth of searching before asking. And just fyi: I *did* several searches with no hits on my question.

It’s not that hard. Upload the stand-alone photo to a different, existing post that doesn’t have a Gallery in it, but DON’T insert the image in that existing post. Close the Editor.
Now, go to the post where you want the stand-alone photo to appear and insert the photo in your post as usual.
Seems there will be more changes coming to the Gallery, wherein you’ll be able to exclude a photo from being included in a Gallery when you upload it. I have no idea yet how this is going to work and am waiting around to find out.

BTW- the search engine in the Support section is much better at returning more recent results than the search box here in the Forums.

Thank you, jj
I actually searched both places to no avail. I appreciate your kinder/gentler help suggestion anyway. ;-)
It still seems like the way I’ve figured it out is easier. Example:
I have a gallery already in the post
I want to add a stand-alone pic.
I upload the pic and it goes where I told it to and also appears in the gallery.
I then open the gallery for editing and move the gallery duplicate to the trash.
My stand alone is still in place.-Lela/that owl

It will be nice if someone figures out a way to give us an option on upload – whether or not we want it in the gallery.

Hi Lela- I’d check to be sure that the image you’ve put in the trash from the Gallery also still shows in the Media Library, because once you empty the trash, that image would be permanently gone from your post as well.
