standalone 'Domain Mapping' upgrade, without a monthly WordPress.com 'plan'?
-
In the past, one was able to purchase just the ‘Domain Mapping’ upgrade, without actually upgrading to a Personal/Premium/Business plan. Is this option still available?
When I now attempt to specify our (independently-purchased) custom domain, the system states that this is ‘included in WordPress.com Premium,’ and seems to try to force us into this major upgrade — which we do NOT currently want!
Please advise ASAP.

Hi. Yes, that’s correct. You will need an upgraded WordPress.com plan on your site in order to map a domain.

So, the option to purchase *just* the “Domain Mapping” upgrade was explicitly canceled?! That’s quite sad! :-(
Still, if WP.com is now forcing us to upgrade to an annual plan, must this necessarily be the “Premium” plan (which seems to be the only option shown when choosing the ‘Add Domain’ option)? According to the Pricing page, the less-expensive “Personal” plan should also support a custom domain….

Hi there,
It has not been possible to buy a stand-alone domain upgrade on WordPress.com for more than a year now. Domains can now only be added as part of a plan.
If you select a domain first, the Premium Plan is selected by default, but you can use the Personal plan as well. To use the Personal Plan, first purchase it by going to My Site ->Plans, and then you’ll be able to add the domain mapping upgrade afterwards from My Site ->Domains.
