Star Rating

  • Unknown's avatar

    Dear All

I am using wordpress.com and have the personal plan. Due to that I can’t upload schemes and not install any additional plugin.
That means I have only access to the preinstalled themes and plugins and preferable would like to use a free theme.
Is there a free preinstalled theme suitable for blogging that offers a star rating feature, so that readers of the blog can rate blog posts as well as rate remarks made to blog posts?
Often this kind of feature seems to be offered through plugins. However, the preinstalled plugin Jetpack seems not to include such a feature.
For me a simple blog but with star rating capability (of posts and remarks) would be sufficient for the time being.
Would be happy if I don’t need to switch to the business plan to get that or to wordpress.org (which would imply a rehosting of my domain if I am informed correctly, don’t think hosting can remain at wordpress.com).

Many thanks in advance and best regards for any hints/help

    Nils Eric

What is the URL of the site you refer to?

  • Unknown's avatar

Type the actual URL into http://whoishostingthis.com to determine who hosts the site please so you know where to post for support.

This is wordpress.COM support. We do not provide support for local installs of wordpress.ORG software, or for wordpress.ORG software installs on paid hosting, linked to wordpress.COM accounts with the Jetpack plugin so they display on the My Sites wordpress.com account page.

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    wordpress.org support
The wordpress.ORG support forum is at http://wordpress.org/support. The wordpress.ORG login link is here https://login.wordpress.org/ If you do not have an account yet then click Create an account https://login.wordpress.org/register/ and if you have lost an account password click Lost password? https://login.wordpress.org/lostpassword/
WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page
See also https://apps.wordpress.org/support/ for app support.

    Jetpack support
Some Jetpack solutions are here http://jetpack.com/support/
Others are in the Jetpack support forum at WordPress.org
    http://wordpress.org/support/plugin/jetpack
However, if help cannot be found at either one then they can file a Jetpack support ticket here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/?jetpack=needs-service

    Dear All
My question is refering to the free themes and plugins of http://www.wordpress.com.
In other words not related to http://www.wordpress.org and not related to hosting, the URL is linking to a page within wordpress.com not an own site.
If someone could give some information regarding my questions in my initial post that would be great.
Thanks in advance and regards, Nils Eric

What is the URL of the site you refer to?

  • Unknown's avatar

    It is this one:
    https://peacefreedomblog.wordpress.com

Activated Free Theme Karuna, commenting on blog posts is possible but as mentioned above I would the ability for blog readers to rate (star rating) the blog posts themselves as well as the comments made to the blog posts.

If there is any free theme or free plug-in or some other “free possibility” to obtain such a simple rating feature, I don’t know.

After having develop my blog I would definitely consider “buying” my own domain and go fo the wordpress.com business plan but for a simple trial (with a simple rating capability) that is “too much”.

Thanks in advance and regards, Nils Eric

Hi there, you can enable a star rating system for users on your posts and pages by following this guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/ratings/

For comments however, we can use Comment Likes: https://en.support.wordpress.com/comment-likes/ which is not quite the same.

Let us know if you have any other question.

    Many thanks for your reply.

    Regarding “Comment Likes”:
Is there no star rating capability available? (but only a like, not even a dislike)

Regarding “a star rating system for users on your posts and pages”:

Pasted this into a blog post (with the ID of my generated rating):
    [polldaddy-rating=”8559307″]

, however that string shows up as a text and not as the 5 star rating I created.

I guess another option would be to paste in the JavaScript somewhere, but where?
In the blog post itself not as it seems since also only appearing as a text in the blog post and not the 5 star rating created.

Hello again, Polldaddy doesn’t seem to give the entire set of instructions for WordPressdotcom users or I missed seeing it. You don’t use that shortcode directly in a post or page.

After you’ve created your new Rating on Polldaddy, go to your site’s WP Admin dashboard http://peacefreedomblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=ratings&action=options

There you should now see options to add the rating to not only posts and pages, but also comments! Click the Advanced options to choose either the Star rating or the Nero (thumb up/down) rating. Make sure you save your options on each type of area.

I’m also going to tag this for Staff to notify them of the discrepancy in instructions.

Staff- here is the Polldaddy support guide https://support.polldaddy.com/adding-a-rating/

and thank you @eyesopened123 for asking about this so we could dig a little further.

  • Hi there,

Your shortcode doesn’t work because you’ve added a hyphen that shouldn’t be there. And the JavaScript section is not for WordPress.com, so you shouldn’t add that at all.

Shortcode ratings only apply to the post or page where the shortcode is added. Not to comments. To have comment ratings you’ll need to use the legacy Ratings feature in WP-Admin that @justjennifer refers to above.

@justjennifer, it looks like the instructions for the WP-Admin settings were removed about 3 years ago, as that’s a legacy feature which is no longer being maintained. Those settings don’t exist on newer accounts any more.

So while it should still work on sites that have it available, we’re no longer fixing any bugs with the feature, and the shortcode is the preferred method for adding ratings to a site.

@kokkieh-Thanks for digging and replying. I am very sorry to hear this news. :(

Also, does this mean that Polldaddy is no longer integrated in WPcom?

    2x :(

  • Not sure what you mean. Polldaddy polls can still be added to WordPress.com posts and pages as always.

It’s only the native ratings feature that has been replaced with the Polldaddy shortcode, as essentially it had meant that our developers needed to maintain two separate code bases on WordPress.com and on Polldaddy. Now the feature lives entirely on Polldaddy and only gets embedded here.
