  There’s no option to start for free. I want to get a feel for things before committing to anything.

  You can start for free by clicking on the ‘My Sites’ link that is shown in the header up top or by clicking this link.

  Note:
  Your free site will look like https://yoursitename.wordpress.com.

  If you want to have a site that looks like https://www.yoursitename.com then you will have to purchase a plan.
