Start free, then upgrade?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I would like to build my own website with wordpress and add plugins to it, starting with a free domain such as xxxy.wordpress.com but then after I finish building my website and I feel ready to go, I want to simply buy a domain and go live/public.

Is this possible or do I need to buy a domain right away before I start building a website?

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

You can start with a free domain such as xxxy.wordpress.com by clicking on the “Start with Free” button on the pricing page, and then by entering a domain on the next page and choosing the free domain option.

That will enable you to create a free website, create posts, and make page customizations with the Gutenberg block editor. Then, when you are ready to go live, you can purchase any paid plan and buy or connect to a new domain.

In order to install plugins with a WordPress.com site, however, you’ll need to purchase at least the Business plan.

Here’s a link to the Pricing Page: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

You may want to look into the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, where WordPress.org will allow you to self-host WordPress and start installing plugins without the need for a premium plan, but you would still need to find/pay for some sort of hosting server.

Here’s a link that goes into detail about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

    I hope this helps!
